Diameter Units Inches
Length Units Feet
Flow Units US Gallons per Minute
Pressure Units Pounds per Square Inch
Note: Fitting Legend provides equivalent pipe lengths for fittings types of various diameters.
Equivalent lengths shown are standard for actual diameters of Sched 40 pipe and CFactors
of 120 except as noted with *. The fittings marked with a * show equivalent lengths values
supplied by manufacturers based on specific pipe diameters and CFactors and they require no
adjustment. All values for fittings not marked with a * will be adjusted in the calculation
for CFactors of other than 120 and diameters other than Sched 40 per NFPA.

Section 5 – Special Consideration and Description
There is no intent to deviate from the prescriptive building code and standards.
Sequence of Operation
Fire Alarm System:
Initiating Devices / Alarms:
The fire alarm system shall be automatic and upon operation of any manual station, smoke detector, flow
switch, thermal detector of other automatic alarm initiating device shall automatically:
a. Activate the all call code 3 pulse temporal pattern over all audio circuits within the building.
b. Flash all visual signals throughout building.
c. Flash an alarm LED and sound an audible signal at the FACP and remote annunciator (if
applicable). Upon acknowledgement, the alarm LED shall light steadily and the audible shall
silence. Subsequent alarms shall re-initiate this sequence.
d. Initiate a transmission of an alarm to the fire department thru digital communicator (central
station).
e. Visually indicate the addressable device or circuit of alarm initiation in plain English via the
LCD display at the FACP and remote annunciator.
f. Activate the outside weatherproof rotating red beacon, location and style approved by fire
department.
Troubles / Supervisory Signals:
Upon operation of any trouble or supervisory signal (i.e. sprinkler tamper switches) the system shall
automatically:
a. Flash an alarm LED and sound an audible signal at the FACP and remote annunciator. Upon
acknowledgement, the alarm LED shall light steadily and the audible shall silence. Subsequent
alarms shall re-initiate this sequence.
b. Visually indicate the addressable trouble / supervisory device in plain English via the LCD
display at the FACP and remote annunciator.
c. Initiate a transmission of a supervisory/trouble signal thru the digital communicator to the central
station. The addressable trouble/supervisory signal device description shall be transmitted to the
central station.
Wet-Pipe Automatic Sprinkler System:
Heat produced from a fire melts the fusible element in a sprinkler head or group of sprinkler heads. The
sprinkler head(s) is opened and water is immediately discharged to control the fire. Water flow alarms
are tripped upon sprinkler flow indicating an alarm condition in the fire alarm panel. Water will continue
to flow from the open sprinkler head(s) until the valves serving that area are manually closed. The
sprinkler system is zoned by floor with shutoff valves (with tamper switches) and flow switches such that
each floor is annunciated separately.

903.1.1 (1.c) TESTING CRITERIA
SECTION 1 – TESTING CRITERIA
The fire alarm and fire protection contractors shall be responsible for performing the final acceptance
tests of his system, completing the required testing certificates, and distributing them to the necessary
parties. The final acceptance tests shall be witnessed by the Fire Department.
FIRE ALARM:
1. Fire Alarm contractor shall submit a test plan in accordance with NFPA 72 Chapter 14. Follow
all requirements and recommendations of NFPA 72 Chapter 14.
2. Fire Alarm contractor shall provide typewritten full NFPA 72 test report for initial acceptance
testing. The completed system shall be subject to the final test and acceptance, UL certification
and periodic inspection, testing and maintenance, in accordance with the Town of Brookline,
Massachusetts State Building Code and NFPA 72 Chapter 10 as follows:
3. The initial acceptance test shall include functional testing of each device shall be functionally
tested. All fire alarm devices shall be listed on test report with addressable numeric designation,
location of device and device description, test results for device
4. Upon function test of each device, the corresponding programmed event sequences shall be
verified. Subsequent events shall include occupant notification, system annunciation, and
municipal reporting.
5. Proper visual notification and synchronization shall be verified.
6. Audible sound pressure levels shall be measured and recorded.
7. Fault conditions shall be simulated and verified as to their proper reporting and system response.
These shall include loss of AC power, battery standby operation, and wiring faults of each and
every circuit.
8. A complete report demonstrating the activation and subsequent acknowledgement of each
activation shall be generated.
9. An annual test and inspection contract will be in evidence at the time of final testing. The final
system acceptance test shall be conducted by the holder of the test contract and witnessed by the
local authority having jurisdiction. Upon successful test and acceptance, a UL certificate and final
report of compliance shall be issued by the testing company.
10. Testing and inspection shall be conducted by the testing company of record as described and in
accordance with NFPA 72. In addition to device testing, maintenance (sensitivity) reports shall be
generated directly from the system during each quarterly test. These reports shall include a
complete listing of each analog device in the system, their corresponding programmed sensitivity
setting, and their current sensitivity level, and the number of times each device has entered alarm
verification mode.
FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM
1. Fire sprinkler contractor shall provide Above Ground test certificate for completed fire sprinkler
system. All requirements of NFPA 13 and NFPA 25 shall be followed for initial acceptance
testing of fire protection systems.
