The first sign will be a blade sign measuring 32"x 40".The sign will be printed on%: inch black PVC.The sign hanger will be 40"jutting out from the building.The lowest point will hang at the required 8 feet from the ground.The sign logo is a modified version of"LHF Hamilton Ornate" and will measure about 10 inches and the smaller lettering is"Itc serif gothic"which will be about an inch.The sign bracket is wrought and cast iron measuring 30" high and 40" long and has two tasteful spotlights mounted.This bracket comes from "Hooks and Lattice" of Carlsbad California. I would like to locate this sign on the pilaster on the left of our front doorway, which is only used by our business.The other businesses in the building use a different entrance. The second sign is a standard black 45"x28" PVC A-frame sign weighted with sand on the inside for stability.This sign will be located the required 5'from the front of the building and no more than 6'from the front door. Both signs include our newly designed logo with other appropriate information. Please see the attached photos and color swatches reflecting the colors you'll see in the signs. Recommendation At its meeting on March 28, 2018 the DRB voted to recommend approval of the proposed signs at 217 Essex Street (Count Orlok), with the following conditions: • There is a minimum clearance of 8 feet from the bottom of the blade sign to the ground surface. • Exposed electrical conduit is prohibited — if proposed bracket with light for blade sign requires conduit, applicant shall not light blade sign or seek an alternative design. • Any subsequent changes to the approved signs will require review by the Design Review Board and approval by the Salem Redevelopment Authority. • Any additional signs not included in this approval—including window signage— will need to be permitted in the sign application process, which includes Design Review Board recommendation. Original Proposal Enclosed are a sign permit application and sign designs that includes specifications and renderings. The applicant is proposing to install two signs: a 32" x 40" PVC blade sign with lighting and a 45" x 28" PVC A-frame sign for their business at 217 Essex Street. The applicant has provided fonts and dimension for both signs, including the logo and color scheme. Staff Comments: The blade sign complies with the sign ordinance: the size is under 24 square feet (8.9 SF), it projects less than 5 feet from the building (40 inches), and the bottom of the sign will be 8 feet from ground level. Staff has requested the applicant provide more information on the A-frame sign, including a scaled drawing of the sign and a contextual photograph and plan of the sign location. The applicant has provided a narrative of the location of the portable sign.
