Redevelopment Authority Design Review Board Recommendation April 18, 2018 131 Essex Street (Moody Interiors): Discussion and vote on proposed signage (sign permit) scheme DRB Review At its April 25, 2018 meeting, the DRB voted unanimously (6-0) to approve the proposed signage (sign permit) scheme for 131 Essex Street (Moody Interiors). Original Proposal The applicant is proposing to the following: a 14" x 74" aluminum wall sign, a 60" x 10" vinyl coated wall directory signs, window graphics, and an a-frame sign for their business at 131 Essex Street. The applicant has provided images and dimensions for all signs. Enclosed are a sign permit application and sign designs that includes specifications and photos. Staff Comments: The wall sign will be mounted above the entranceway of the business on the black area on the sill above. The existing directory signs are located on each side of the building perpendicular to the street (west and east faces) and are being updated with the applicant's business name. The window graphics cover less than 20% glass for the store. The sign program appears to comply with the sign ordinance. There is no exterior lighting proposed. Staff recommends DRB approval of the proposed sign scheme with the following conditions: • Any subsequent changes to the approved signs will require review by the Design Review Board and approval by the Salem Redevelopment Authority. • Any additional signs not included in this approval—including window signage— will need to be permitted in the sign application process, which includes Design Review Board recommendation.
