Ground improvements were previously completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The elements were previously excavated to design cutoff elevation. The area was over excavated a minimum 6" below design BOF elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and the footing. All GCC elements were carefully located and exposed during excavation. The sub grade soil in this area is existing loamy urban fill generally consisting of F - M sand, little gravel, little silt containing wood, organic silt, ash, slag etc. A 6 - 12" thick layer of ¾" crushed stone was placed and graded. Mirafi filter fabric was placed between the sub grade and crushed stone footing base material. The surface of the stone was compacted utilizing the heavy plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. Installation of water main utilities continued within the NE project limits to complete the loop. The trench was carried down to design elevation utilizing the Deere 380 excavator. The class 52, 8" diameter CLDI piping was installed, bedded and covered in clean imported bedding sand. All appropriate bends, solid sleeves and fittings were used as necessary. Boulders were used as thrust blocks. The trench was backfilled using the same material generated during excavation consisting of F - M sand, some gravel, trace silt. Oversize material was segregated and removed from the material during excavation. Approximately 18" thick lifts were placed and graded.
