Plate Compactors, CAT 980 & 950 Loaders & IR Pro Pac 110 Series 10 ton Drum Roller TEST METHOD:Sand Cone Nuclear Densometer TITLE:Inspector Staff Engineer EngineerX OBSERVATIONS: This report follows a site visit to observe/test the earthwork for: Footing trench excavation. Footing excavation continued along the Southern perimeter of building 1. The trench was excavated to design elevation utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. Ground improvements were previously completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The elements were previously excavated to design cutoff elevation. The area was over excavated a minimum 6" below design BOF elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and the footing. All GCC elements were carefully located and exposed during excavation. The sub grade soil in this area is existing loamy urban fill generally consisting of F - M sand, little gravel, little silt containing wood, organic silt, ash, slag etc. In some areas, organic tannin bark sub grade conditions were present. Excavation in this area appears to be at or nearing the transition from urban fill to tannin bark. A 6 - 12" thick layer of ¾" crushed stone was placed and graded. Mirafi filter fabric was placed between the sub grade and crushed stone footing base material. The surface of the stone was compacted utilizing the heavy plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. Backfilling was performed for previously installed STC 4800. The backfill material used is the same urban fill generated during building 1 perimeter footing excavation generally consisting of F - M sand and gravel, little silt. 18 - 24" thick lifts were placed and graded. Each lift was compacted utilizing the Wacker plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. De watering and application of crushed stone was performed as necessary to maintain semi dry and stable backfill conditions. The material used is the more select gravel generated from footing excavation generally consisting of F - C gravel and sand, trace silt. A single 12" thick lift was placed and graded. The fill was compacted utilizing the Wacker plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. Common fill was placed along the exterior foundation during backfilling.
