OBSERVATIONS:
This report follows a site visit to observe/test the earthwork for: Footing trench excavation.
Footing trench excavation continued at the west side of the elevator pit (pet wash) of building 1.
The trench was excavated to design elevation utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat
cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. Ground improvements were previously
completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The elements were previously
excavated to design cutoff elevation. The area was over excavated a minimum 6" below design BOF
elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and the footing. All GCC elements
were carefully located and exposed during excavation. The sub grade soil in this area is either urban
fill containing wood, ash, brick, slag etc. or tannin bark. A 6 - 12" thick layer of ¾" crushed stone
was placed and graded. The surface of the stone was compacted utilizing the heavy plate compactor
exhibiting stable/firm conditions. De watering was performed as necessary. Some of the footing
locations were lowered to accommodate plumbing/sanitary line penetrations. GCC elements were exposed
and sawcut accordingly. The gravel structural fill over burden was stockpiled nearby for re use as
backfill against the perimeter foundation. The material was placed in a single 12 - 16" thick lift and
compacted utilizing the wacker plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions.
Installation of water utility services was initiated @ the west side of building 1. The tee's on
the main were located and appropriate size piping and bends were installed to align with the sleeves in
the wall. Installation of these utilities remained incomplete on this date.
