Footing trench excavation was performed within the northern limits (Utility rooms) of building 1. The trench was excavated to design elevation utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. Ground improvements were previously completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The elements were previously excavated to design cutoff elevation. The area was over excavated a minimum 6" below design BOF elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and the footing. All GCC elements were carefully located and exposed during excavation. The sub grade soil in this area is either previously placed processed gravel structural fill or urban fill containing wood, ash, brick, slag etc. The excavation generally fell on the transition. A 6 - 12" thick layer of ¾" crushed stone was placed and graded. The surface of the stone was compacted utilizing the heavy plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. The gravel structural fill over burden was used as backfill along column line 1 or stockpiled nearby for future re use as foundation backfill. The material was placed in a single 12 - 16" thick lift and compacted utilizing the wacker plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions. Installation of water utility services was completed @ the west side of building 1. The piping was installed through the wall penetrations and sealed to the foundation with link seal. All appropriate materials were used including mechanical joint fittings, threaded rod, solid sleeves, friction clamps and welded flange risers. Backfilling was not performed on this date. Rough grading was performed for proposed pavement areas. The majority of base course material was previously placed. The material used is 1.5" reprocessed material from the Caruso pit in Revere, MA.
