OBSERVATIONS:
This report follows a site visit to observe/test the earthwork for: Footing trench excavation.
Pavement base course preparation was performed @ the west side of building 2. Sub grade elevation
(15" below FG) was previously achieved. A layer of geogrid was placed over the sub grade. The pavement
base course gravel used is 1 1/2" reprocessed material from the Caruso pit in Revere, MA. A 12" thick
lift was placed and graded utilizing the Deere bulldozer. The gravel was compacted utilizing the IR
drum roller exhibiting stable/firm conditions
Installation of gas main utilities continued. The trench was carried down to design elevation
utilizing the Deere excavator. A base of clean imported sand was placed at the bottom of the
excavation. The fused plastic gas piping and tracer were installed by national grid. The piping was
bedded and covered in clean imported sand. Tape was used over the sand. The shallow trench was
backfilled using the same gravel generated during excavation. The surface of the trench was compacted
utilizing the Wacker plate compactor exhibiting stable/firm conditions.
Footing trench excavation was performed for a small section of foundation near the elevator pit of
building 1. The trench was excavated to design elevation utilizing the Deere 450 excavator equipped
with a flat cutting edge (flared teeth) to minimize sub grade disturbance. Ground improvements were
previously completed in this area by installing GCC deep foundation elements. The elements were
previously excavated to design cutoff elevation. The area was over excavated a minimum 6" below design
BOF elevation to provide a cushion/base of material between the elements and the footing. All GCC
elements were carefully located and exposed during excavation. The sub grade soil in this area is
either compacted structural fill or urban fill containing wood, ash, brick, slag etc. A 6 - 12" thick
