2003-12-10 SRA Executive Session MinutesMINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING
OF THE SALEM REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
HELD ON DECEMBER 10, 2003
EXECUTIVE SESSION
Old Police Station (OPS)
Mr. Walsh gave an update on correspondence between the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)
and the developers of the OPS. There has been confirmation that the spill is from the PEM
and it is of a large quantity. There is contamination under the YYTING House.
Mr. Walsh stated that they are working on a tentative resolution to the problem. The PEM
will pay for the cleanup. Since the contamination is broad, and beyond the scope of
insurance coverage, they are not sure what they will do in the long run.
Mr. Walsh stated that the redevelopment of the Old Police Station will continue with no
effect. The developers are considering litigation because they spent over $400,000 on the
cleanup. The Museum will settle even though it is beyond their insurance coverage because
they do not want litigation. So, the SRA will be getting the loan amount back.
Mr. Baldini questioned whether the PEM will cleanup the YYTING House. Mr. Walsh
stated that they have to report it, but doesn’t know what they will do about it.
