Attorneys At Law 222 Cabot Street Beverly, Mass. 01915 Sir: Your communication dated February 6, 1984 to Fire Chief Robert J . Crowley concerning the complaints of your clients of certain conditions alleged to exist at Victoria Station Restaurant , 88 Wharf Street, Salem, Mass. has been turned over to me as the Fire Marshal for the City of Salem. This occupancy being located under residential occupancies , has apparently been a problem in many ways for the persons who make their homes adjacent to the restaurant. Because of several past complaints from the interested parties , this office has made several inspections at this site. I have personally spoken with the managers over the years and have inspected the hood and duct system, both within the kitchen and on the roof. The six month inspection of the fixed fire extinguishing system as required by fire code is being complied with and a copy of the inspection report from Phoenix Fire Services , Inc. has been filed in a timely manner with this office. The duct system has been cleaned by Allstate Maintenance Co. as of Dec. 5, 1983, and has been provided as an on going service based on need. The Salem Health Department has made inspections from time to time and has felt the duct work is being maintained in an appropriate manner. It is not feasable for the Fire Prevention Bureau to set forth any specific cleaning timetable, as the need for cleaning varies with the amount of use and activity at the cooking area. This is a changeable condition which requires more cleaning during the summer months when activity is greatest. The duct is satisfactory as of this date. The management has become aware of the worries of the residents and have provided for a monthly service inspection by Balco, Inc. and I have been furnished copies of the most recent reports of inspection. The inspections have shown that certain items such as the fan belts must be replaced on occasion and this has been done. I have found that as of this date all conditions appear satisfactory at the Victoria Station occupancy and that the management agrees to continue with the inspection services for preventive maintenance. It would be appropriate for the residents to inform the restaurant manager in writing, if they feel a condition exists which should be attended to. However, the system appears to be operating satisfactorily at this time. cc: Salem Building Inspector Respectfu}J/ly yours , State Fire Marshal Victoria Station Manager apt. David J.
