SECTION 09 9100—PAINTING
PART 1 —GENERAL
1.01 PROVISIONS INCLUDED
A. The general provisions of the Contract including the General Conditions, Supplementary
Conditions and relevant portions of Division 01 -General Requirements apply to the work
specified under this Section.
B. Contractors are directed to Section 01 1100 Summary of Work for the general intent of the
Contract Documents.
1.02 DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A. Provide all painting required for work such as window trim associated with the replacement
windows, (except where specifically excluded), complete,in-place,as shown, specified or
necessary for a proper installation. Provide surface preparation,priming and finish coats.
B. Paint is used in this Section to mean all types of applied coatings, including undercoaters,
sealers, stains,thinners,enamels, varnishes and all other materials specified here or
conventionally included under the general term.
C. Paint all interior and exterior surfaces as shown, specified or scheduled and,further,
including,but not limited to,the following:
1. Clean,scrape and repaint the existing exterior ornamental metal panels and trim at
the bow and bay windows as noted on the drawings.
2. Painting of new interior trim at the new replacement aluminum windows as detailed.
D. Painting not included:
1. Prefinished items including the new replacement aluminum windows
1.03 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE
A. The following related work is specified in the Sections noted:
1. Shop coats: In Section providing shop coated items.
1.04 SUBMITTALS
A. In accordance with the Division 01 provisions, submit:
1. Manufacturer's Data: For information only,submit manufacturer's specifications,
including paint label analysis and application instructions for each material proposed.
List each material and cross-reference to the finish system number.

1.05 JOB CONDITIONS
A. Do not apply water-base paints when the temperature of surfaces to be painted and the
surrounding air temperatures are below 50 degrees F. unless otherwise permitted by the paint
manufacturer's printed instructions.
B. Do not apply solvent-thinned paints when the temperature of surfaces to be painted and the
surrounding air temperatures are below 45 degrees F.,unless otherwise permitted by the paint
manufacturer's printed instructions.
C. Do not apply paint in snow,rain,fog,or mist or when the relative humidity exceeds 85%,nor
to damp or wet surfaces unless otherwise permitted by the paint manufacturer's printed
instructions. Painting may be continued during inclement weather only if the areas and
surfaces to be painted are enclosed and heated within the temperature limits specified by the
paint manufacturer during application and drying periods.
D. The project site has been reviewed for lead based paints by Covino Environmental at both
exterior and interior surfaces. Test results were positive with a range from<0.05 mg/cm2 to
1.4 mg/cm2. Based on these results,work crews will need both OSHA and RRP certifications
and must comply with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926.62-Lead.
1.06 ALTERNATES
A.Refer to Section 0123 00-Alternates for details of the alternates which may affect the work of this
Section.
PART 2-PRODUCTS
2.01 QUALITY OF MATERIALS
A. Provide the best quality grade of the various types of coatings as regularly manufactured by
approved paint materials manufacturer. Materials not displaying the manufacturer's
identification as a standard,best-grade product will not be acceptable.
B. Provide undercoat paint produced by the same manufacturer as the finish coats. Use only
thinners approved by the paint manufacturer, and use only to recommended limits.
C. Provide paint of durable and washable quality. Do not use paint materials which will not
withstand normal washing as required to remove pencil marks,ink,ordinary soil,etc.,or
which will show discoloration,loss of gloss,staining,or other damage when subject to
ordinary wear and maintenance procedures.

2.02 COLORS
A. Color selection shall be made by the Architect and summarized in schedules or conveyed
through use of color chips. Paint shade names, numbers, or chips may be those of any
manufacturer,and shall not be limited to colors in the line of the proposed paint materials
manufacturer. Match desired shades in the brand of materials proposed and submit samples
as specified above.
PART 3-EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION
A. Examine areas and conditions under which painting work is to be performed. Inspect
substrates to receive finishes specified under this Section.
B. Do not proceed with application of any finish until conditions which would impair the
satisfactory appearance or long-term performance of paint finishes area corrected or formally
waived.
3.02 SURFACE PREPARATION
A. General:
1. Perform all preparation and cleaning procedures in strict accordance with the paint
manufacturer's instructions and as herein specified,for each particular substrate
conditions.
2. Remove all hardware,hardware accessories, machined surfaces,plates,lighting
fixture,and similar items in place and not to be finish painted, or provide surface-
applied protection prior to the surface preparation and painting operations.
Following completion of painting of each space or area,reinstall the removed items
employing workmen skilled in the trades involved.
3. Clean surfaces to be painted before applying paint or surface treatments. Remove oil
and grease with clean cloths and cleaning solvents prior to mechanical cleaning.
Provide cleaning solvents of low toxicity and a flash point in excess of 100 degrees
F. Program the cleaning and painting so that dust and other contaminants from the
cleaning process will not fall in wet,newly painted surfaces.
4. Do not clean surfaces more than one day in advance of priming.
S. Metal surfaces with rust must be cleaned with hand tool cleaning to remove loose or
flaking rust in accordance with SSPC-SP2.
6. After hand tool cleaning,those areas require solvent cleaning to remove oil,grease,
rust, and dust from removing rust in accordance with SSPC SPI.

1. Clean wood surfaces of all dirt,oil,or other foreign substances with scrapers,mineral
spirits, and sandpaper,as required. Sandpaper smooth those finished surfaces
exposed to view,and dust off.
2. Scrape and clean small,dry, seasoned knots and apply a thin coat of white shellac or
other approved sealer,before application of the priming coat.
3. After priming,fill holes and imperfections in finish surfaces with putty or plastic
wood-filler. Sandpaper smooth when dry.
3.03 APPLICATION
A. General:
1. Apply paint by brush,roller or spray in accordance with the manufacturer's
directions. Use brushes best suited for the type of material being applied.
2. The number of coats and paint film thickness required is the same regardless of the
application method. Do not apply succeeding coats until the previous coat has
completely dried. Sand between coat applications with fine sandpaper,or rub
surfaces with pumice stone where required to produce an even, smooth surface in
accordance with the coating manufacturer's directions.
3. Apply additional coats when undercoats, stains,or other conditions show through the
final coat of paint,until the paint film is of uniform finish,color and appearance.
4. Finish exterior doors on tops,bottoms,and side edges the same as the exterior faces,
unless otherwise indicated.
B. Prime Coats:
1. Before application of finish coats,apply a prime coat to material which is required to
be painted or finished,and which has not been prime coated by others.
2. Recoat primed and sealed walls and ceilings where there is evidence of suction spots
or unsealed areas in first coat,to assure a finish coat with no burn-through or other
defects due to insufficient sealing.
3.04 CLEAN UP
A. During the progress of the painting work keep work areas clean of debris,discarded
materials,oily rags or papers.
B. Keep oily rags and other flammable materials in covered metal containers and remove from
job site regularly.
C. At the conclusion of painting work,clean all paint spatters and drips from adjacent surfaces.
Clean paint from glass, hardware and surfaces accidentally painted. Remove all paint cans,
tools,papers and masking materials. Leave work areas perfectly clean and free of rubbish
produced by the work of this Section.

3.05 SCHEDULE OF PAINT SYSTEMS
A. The following paint systems comprise the major types required for the exterior and interior
applications. For each system, special preparation requirements and number of coats is
given. Special preparation requirements are in addition to, and not in lieu of,the general
preparation requirements specified above in this Section.
B. At the end of this Section an Applications Schedule is included to cross-reference the Paint
Systems to the actual surfaces in the Project to be painted.
EXTERIOR PAINT SYSTEMS
3.06 System E- 1 (Ceramic Coating: Gloss)

3.08 APPLICATIONS SCHEDULE
A. The following schedule identifies the principal surfaces to be painted and the paint
systems to be applied to them.
B. This schedule is not exhaustive,but is merely indicative. All surfaces except those
specifically excluded or obviously not intended to receive paint shall be painted. Where
a surface requiring paint is not mentioned below,then the paint system for the most
similar substrate shall govern the number of coats and the painter shall confer with the
Architect to decide upon the actual paint materials.

Finalcoat, LLC d/b/a Rhino Shield of NE (hereinafter known as Rhino Shield) will use approximately
three (3) days to perform the job located at 292 Essex Street (Zisson Building), Salem, MA_ Rhino
Shield will paint finish coat on outside casings of galvanized metal of the two (2) large bump-out
galvanized windows in front on 292 Essex Street and two (2) large bump-<Xt galvanized metal
windows on right side of building on Sewall Street. Rhino Shield will also coat two (2) oval porthole
windows on right side of building on Sewall Street. Color to be: Carrington Beige- HC-93 All six (6)
windows will be prepped by Environmental Restorations, inc., including remedlatwn of lead and rust.
Environmental Restorations, Inc. will supply Rhino Shield with pohce detail,all permits as needed and
mechanical lift as we perform our work
Rhino Shield will supply Environmental Restorations with the pnmer (Rust Bond),which
Environmental Restorations, Inc. will use on the prepping of the six (6) windows to be painted. Rhino
Shield will perform the last step of painting the outside of the six (6)windows described herein with
Finish Coat Rhino Shield Enamel
The wage rate paid to Rhino Shield's subcontractors is S65.96 per hour. No Warranty is given,
expressed or implied on work performed. The total cost of Rhino Shield applying the Finish Cost to
i the six (6) wmdows described herein is Twenty-One Thousand, Sic Hundred Dollars (S21,600.00).
