The distraught caller met the crews on arrival reporting that the roof had collapsed into her second floor apartment. Captain Jerry Giuma, the officer of Ladder 1, reported the apartment `looked like a rain forest"as water was pouring in from, the heavy raimsll. The a--nal ladder was set up and when fire "ghters wcuded-to the top they fo;;ad the roo,`bowrd in. A substantia: amount of water had collected and was unable to recede due to a blocked opening in the roof s drainage system. Fire fighters were able to make their way onto the roof and clear the blocked drain, however the weight of the water had collapsed the roof. The roof had sunken more than a foot as indicated by the flashing around the chimney and drain. Building Inspector John Goggin was called to the scene to assess the damage. The building's owner from Marblehead also responded. Inspector Goggin determined the building unsafe and the residents had to seek shelter elsewhere.
