Pierre : RE: 15 Thorndike Street Salem, MA 01970 I represent the Estate of Dorothy Gustafson and represented Miss Gustafson for many years prior to her death in August 19, 2004 . Miss Gustafson' s mother and uncle, Charles W. Johanson, purchased 15 Thorndike Street in Salem many years ago on or about February 14, 1907 and immediately converted the property to a two family dwelling. There was one apartment on the first floor for Mr. Johanson and one apartment on the second floor for Dorothy Gustafson and her family. Each apartment had their own kitchen and full bathroom, bedroom, dining room and living room. Mr. Johanson served in the Navy during the war and while there, his first floor apartment was rented to a woman named Mary Patrick. Upon Mr. Johanson' s return from service, he occupied this apartment until his death and thereafter, the first floor apartment was rented to Otilla Gustafson until her death which was approximately sometime during 1966 . During this entire period, Dorothy Gustafson occupied the second floor apartment with her mother and worked as a school teacher in the Salem School system. After the last first floor tenant died, Dorothy Gustafson, my client and sole owner of the entire property, decided not to rent out the first floor apartment as she was elderly and becoming increasingly blind. The first floor apartment remained unoccupied but fully intact and Miss Gustafson continued to occupy her second floor apartment until shortly before her death. Miss Gustafson continued to pay separate electric bills on each apartment until the building was sold. This letter is being sent to you to clarify any misunderstanding concerning the use of the premises at 15 Thorndike Street which at all times has been used as a two family dwelling.
