RE: 14 Symonds Street
Mr. Davis:
You have asked what would be required to construct an additional bedroom on the lower
level of 14 Symonds Street.
A building permit would need to be pulled by a Massachusetts Licensed Construction
Supervisor. The egress window that exits currently meets the building code. A
hardwired smoke detector would be required as well as a fire door separating the
mechanical area of the basement from the living area. Although the ceiling height is
slightly below code, the room has existed and therefore the height will be considered
grandfathered.
Sincerely,
homas St. Terre

Dear Thomas,
Per our conversation on September 9h, I'm requesting in writing the requirements for the
completion a build-out of an additional bedroom at one of my homes located at 14
Symonds Street in Salem.
When you came out to see the living space, you mentioned the need for sufficient
window area(currently a fiill size window is in place), a working smoke detector in the
bedroom, a fire door separating the bedroom from the laundry area where the furnace is
also located and you mentioned that you would waive the ceiling height. The proposed
living area is at grade, not below ground.
I would also need to know if a building permit would be required in order for this work to
be completed.
Could you please fax me the requirements that we would need to accomplish in order to
complete this build-out. I will then share these with the Quality Enhancement Department
when they come out to see this property on the le of this month.
If you have any questions regarding this issue, please call me at 781-273-0310.
Please fax the written requirements to me at 781-273-6263.
Sincerely,
James M. Davis
