61 SUMMER STREET - BUILDING INSPECTION t February 17,1998 Leo Tremblay: Building Inspector 1 Salem Green Salem Me 01970 Dear Mr. Tremblay: We moved into 61 Summer Street, Salem in November 1979, with a rent to lease agreement. The property consisted of two separate builds, a multi unit in the front house and a single family in the rear. We have lived in the rear house for eighteen years. In July 1984 we assumed the existing mortgage at the Heritage Co Operative Bank and took a note with the owner. At that time, the City of Salem made us put a second egress by means of a fire escape so that all the units would have a means of escape in case of fire. Since the building inspector inspected the premises, we had no reason to believe or question the legal status of the house. We decided in 1988 to separate the gas utilities, one to each floor. Again no one challenged us against making such a change. We therefore assume we were doing the correct and legal thing to our property. Our real estate tax bill is assessed as a multi family as well as our insurance coverage. The census takers also have us listed as a multi unit. As we have stated above, we believed that our property was always a legal multi family, therefore we are now requesting that it can be legally a multi family.
