133 Washington Street (Salem Loan & Jewelry): Discussion and vote on
proposed signage
DRB Recommendation
At their meeting on July 27, 2011, the DRB voted to recommend approval of the
proposed signage at 133 Washington Street with the following conditions:
- The "buy-sell-loan" shall be removed from signage on right hand window
and the remaining text shall be the same size and alignment as text on left
window; and
- The neon sign currently located on an interior wall and visible from outside
may remain if it is disconnected and not illuminated. Otherwise, it must be
located where it is not obviously visible from outside.
Staff Comment for SRA Meeting
As of the submission deadline, the applicant has not provided the revised
submission. It is anticipated for the SRA meeting.
Proposal for July 27 DRB Meeting
The submission includes a letter and photo showing the sign proposal.
The proposal consists of window decals. The wall sign above the windows is not
being proposed at this time.
The decals are stated as being 8" x 67" made of black vinyl with 3" gold lettering.
Staff Comment for DRB Meeting
The window decal proposal complies with City and SRA guidelines in terms of
area.
The business also has an illegal neon sign on the interior wall that is visible from
the public right of way. Staff has explained to the applicant that signage visible
from the right of way needs to be permitted. Staff has further explained that neon
signs are prohibited within the Urban Renewal Areas.
Staff strongly recommends that any DRB recommendation to the SRA
explicitly state that the neon sign must be removed before the new signing
is approved and that the temporary banner must be removed.
