Building Frontage: 40 linear feet on Washington St, and 55 linear feet on Essex St
Maximum allowed: 40 square feet on Washington and 55 linear feet on Essex St
Proposed Signage: Includes the installation of six burgundy fabric awnings. Three
fronting Essex Street and three fronting Washington Street. The
signage will locate on the awning flap and will be in white lettering.
The signage fronting Washington St is 116"x 50" (40 sq ft) and the
three signs on Essex St are 149" x18" (18 sq ft each, 54 sq ft total).
Total Area of Sign(s): 40 sq ft fronting Washington St, and 54 sq ft fronting Barton Sq
DRB Approval: 1/25/06
SRA Approval: 2/24/06
Recommendation: This application has been approved with the DRB recommendations by
the SRA and revised to meet the dimensional requirements of the Salem
Sign Ordinance. I recommend that the proposal be approved as revised.

RECOMMENDATION:
At their meeting on January 25, 2006, the Design Review Board recommended
approval of the proposed signage as revised in the plans submitted to the SRA on
February 8,2006. The changes include: removing the phone number and name from
the two smaller awnings along Washington Street;removing the name and phone
number from two of the awnings along Lappin Park; and placing"Sushi&Asian
Cuisine" on the two awnings along Lappin Park.
PROPOSAL:
The proposal includes the installation of five awnings. Three of the awnings will be
facing Lappin Park and will replace the existing Phoenix School awnings. They will
be made of burgundy fabric and be 292"in length and 54"in height. The owner is
also proposing three awnings along Washington Street, made of the same material.
The two on either side of the door will measure 103"in length and 54"in height and
the one over the door will measure 180" in length and 54" in height.
The signage proposed will be on the awning flap and will be white lettering. The
current proposal calls for signage on all of the awnings.

approve the proposed signage as the DRB recommended. The SRA noted that the
approval did not include lighting of the sign/awnings and stressed that the awnings
