118 WASHINGTON STREET - SIGN PERMIT 118 Washington Steet (Cate Polonia) Salem ® Redevelopment Authority Design Review Board Proposal March 23, 2011 118 Washington Street (Cafe Polonia): Discussion and vote on proposed signage DRB Recommendation At their meeting on March 23, 2011 , the DRB voted to recommend approval of the proposed signage at 118 Washington Street for Cafe Polonia with the following conditions: - The menu box depth shall be reduced to 3"; - The portable sign shall not include the header board; and - The portable sign shall be located on the sidewalk. It was also suggested that the portable sign include the business name in the top 3" to 31/2". Staff Comment The applicant has revised the proposal to conform to the DRB's conditions. Proposal to DRB The submission dated March 1, 2011 , includes a cover letter, menu box sketch, cut sheet, and photographs. The proposal consists of a portable sign and a menu box. The portable sign is proposed to be 183/4" x 373/4" for a total of 4.9 square feet. The portable sign is proposed to be located on a grassy area in Lappin Park. The SRA will not approve the location on the grass, and an alternative location will need to be determined. Otherwise, the sign complies with City and SRA guidelines. The menu box is proposed to be 24" x 30" and would project 4.5" off the building. It would be made of wood to match the fagade of the restaurant. The sign is made out of wood and has a display area of 18 %" by 26 %". A spec sheet is attached as part of my application as well as a proposed location. Please note that the sign would be utilized without the top portion which is detachable at the recommendation of the Design Review Board. The sign would be positioned on the sidewalk in proximity to our restaurant in a way so that it does not interfere with foot traffic. The sidewalk area in front of our restaurant is over 20 feet wide. At the recommendation of the Design Review Board we will try to affix a permanent logo to the sign. In addition, as part of this application,I am proposing a menu box to be permanently attached to the building right of the entryway. Since our opening just a few months ago, many tourists have asked and suggested that we have a menu box outside the restaurant as is customary with many other establishments. Visitors to the city like to explore their dining options without necessarily having to walk into establishments and ask what kind of food they serve. The menu box has dimensions of 24"by 30"and projects just 3"from the building. It would be permanently attached to the building. Our lunch and dinner menus would be posted in the menu box. The sign would be positioned directly across the entrance to the restaurant on the grass, in a similar fashion to how such signed are positioned by our neighbors. The purpose of the sign would be to list daily specials and/ or events. In addition, as part of this application, I am proposing a menu box to be permanently attached to the building on the right side of the entryway.
