URBAN ELEMENTS SIGN AND FACADE 83 Washington Street (Urban Elements) Signage and door color Salem ® Redevelopment Authority Design Review Board Proposal January 26, 2011 83 Washington Street (Urban Elements and Sankofa Massage & Bodywork): Discussion and vote on proposed signage and door color DRB Recommendation At their meeting on January 26, 2011 , the DRB voted to recommend approval of the signage proposal and door color at 83 Washington Street with the following conditions: - The wall sign lettering shall match the other wall sign lettering on the building and be 9" high and centered over the storefront; - The portable sign shall comply with the dimensional requirements in the ordinance (no greater than six square feet in area and no more than 24" in width); - The "post it note" feature on the top portion of the portable sign shall be removed; and - The bulleted list in the bottom portion of the portable sign shall be reduced in size by eliminating two bulleted items and reducing the font size so that it corresponds to the font size in the top portion of the sign. Staff Comment The applicant has revised the proposal to conform to the DRB conditions. Proposal The proposal, as described in materials from Fastsigns, consists of a blade sign, wall sign, and a portable sign. The blade sign would use the existing bracket and is proposed to be 36" x 36" with half of the area being used by Urban Elements and the other half being used by Sankofa Massage & Bodywork. The sign complies with City and SRA guidelines. The wall sign is proposed to be individual 9" letters centered over the storefront. Note: The other storefronts have 10" letters. The portable sign panel is proposed to be 25" x 37" and would be attached to a stand that is a few inches taller. Note: The portable sign ordinance states, "No portable sign shall exceed six (6) square feet per side and shall not exceed two (2) feet in width." The proposal is 6.42 square feet (not including the stand's feet) and is one inch wider than permitted by ordinance. Salem Redevelopment Authority The applicant has verbally indicated the portable sign would be placed along the building. The ordinance requires the sign be within ten feet of the entrance and that there is five feet of unobstructed sidewalk clearance. This should be noted in the final SRA decision. The applicant would also like to paint the front door red and will bring a color sample to the meeting.
