of signage
SRA Decision
At its meeting on February 10, 2016 the SRA voted unanimously (3-0) to approve
the proposal to install signage at 60 Washington Street Melt Ice ream).
Recommendation
At its regular meeting on January 27, 2016 the Design Review Board voted
unanimously to recommend approval of the proposed signage at 60 Washington Street
(Melt Ice Cream), conditional upon the following:
• That the all of the window "cone" logos be the same size (15" x 15.8")
• That the cone logo on the window of the door is lowered slightly
Staff Comment for February 10, 2016 SRA Meeting
The applicant complied with both of the above noted conditions of approval. All signage
is compliant with the City's sign ordinance.
Proposal
The applicant recently purchased the former Salem Screamery ice cream shop. She
seeks to remove all Salem Screamery signage and replace it with the proposed signage
shown in the enclosed materials. The new proposed signage consists of:
• 2 black aluminum backed flush mounted signs with gold painted border and 1/2"
thick mounted gold letters and logo (one on each side of the storefront)
• 5 white vinyl window decals (one on each window) rotating between the ice
cream cone logo and the store's name.
• A black PVC blade sign with gold lettering mounted with a black scroll bracket in
the location of where the 3D ice cream cone currently sits.
Staff Comments for January 26, 2016 DRB Meeting
The total square footage for all proposed signage exceeds what would normally be
allowed in the downtown at this location. The applicant seeks to install a total of 54
square feet of signage, whereas the storefront has a total of 51 square feet of linear
frontage (Washington Street and Lynde Street combined) —the City's Sign Ordinance

calls for a 1-1 ratio of linear frontage to square footage for signage in the Urban
Renewal Area.
I advise the Board to condition that the applicant reduce the total square footage of
signage to no more than 51 square feet.

60 Washington Street (Salem Screamery): Discussion of proposed signage
SRA Decision
At their meeting on April 10, 2013, the SRA voted to approve the March 27, 2013
DRB recommendation for the proposed signage at 60 Washington Street.
DRB Recommendation
At their meeting on March 27, 2013, the DRB voted to recommend approval of
the proposed building and projecting signs with the following comment:
- The sign along Lynde Street will be centered over the window
Staff Comment
The storefront is permitted 51 sq.ft. of signage. The total proposed building
signage is 26.35 sq.ft.
The signage complies with the Sign Ordinance and SRA Guidelines.
Proposal for March 27 DRB Meeting
The submission, dated March 18, 2013, includes 2 surface signs and 1 projecting
sign.
The surface signs are 15'x120" and 15'x96". They will be fabricated out of
aluminum panel with white 1/2" PVC lettering, stud mounted to the panel. The
colors of the sign are a dark green background with white lettering.
The projecting sign is a 3-dimensional ice cream cone made out of fiberglass.
The approximate size is 37"x15".
