TEL:978-745-9595•FAX:978-740-0404 DIRECTOR October 23, 2003 Ms. Pamela Zerber Body Talk Tanning 132 North Street Salem, MA 01970 Dear Ms. Zerber: Thank you for your submission of a Sign Permit Application for Body Talk Tanning at 132 North Street. In your application, you proposed installing two 13-foot purple sunbrella awnings with white painted text over the buildings four first-floor windows. Your application was reviewed by Tania Hartford in the Department of Planning and Community Development(DPCD),who you met with and your sign maker had several conversations with regarding this application. Asou know, your business is located within one of the city's Entrance Corridors. Under an Y t1' ordinance passed by the City Council all signs proposed in the designated Entrance Corridors must be reviewed by the Sign Review Committee. The Committee reviews the size, location, type of material and design of all signs located within the Entrance Corridors. When reviewing applications such as yours, the Committee looks to the Salem Sign Ordinance and SRA Sign Manual for guidance. The Salem Redevelopment Authority Sign Manual says: 1. "No wall sign shall violate the architecture of the building to which it is attached and shall not abscure the definition of two separate planes, structural elements or major building subdivisions." P.Definitions/Uses,Section D.5) The awnings are attached to the wall, over two separate windows thereby abscuring the definition of these two structural elements. 2. "No sign shall be allowed to violate the architecture of the building to which it is attached." (III. General Regulations,Section D.) The proposed awnings are out of place with the historic architecture and character of the building. When we met,you brought several photos of awnings permitted throughout the city. As we discussed, two of these awnings in the sample you brought to us would be appropriate for your building-namely the awnings on the Army Barracks and Fountain Place because each of those awnings cover a single window (see attached). Unfortunately, the Sign Review Committee made up of the Building Inspector,City Planner, and Representative from the Salem Redevelopment Authority (SRA) reviewed your application and denied the proposal, as submitted, at this time. However, if you would consider altering your application so that your awnings match the examples you showed us,I am confident that your application would be approved by the Committee. Thank you for your patience as we reviewed your application. Please contact Tania Hartford of my office at 978/745-9595 x311 should you have further questions regarding this matter. This is truly the description of "A Special Plate"and VodyXWk. " Robin and I (Pam) wanted to introduce ourselves and let you know what we're all about and also to give you an exclusive inside "peek" at our plans for our new location at 132 North Street, since we're neighbors and all. We wanted you to be the first to know how we plan to Beautify our little corner of the world on North Street and how we hope to have a domino effect, thus beautifying the North Salem business section of town. So much to tell in such a short time, I guess I'll begin with Robin Grant, my business partner, who also happens to be the best friend anyone could ask for. This whole legacy began with her starting her own business on Washington Street in downtown Salem 14 years ago when she was a bright eyed, ambitious 21 year old college grad with a dream. At the time, she was designing her own clothing, gifts and operating a top notch tanning salon. After many 16 hour days, her hard work turned to success and resulted in moving her store to a bigger location at 6 Front Street where she has been for the past 12 years. The next stop is 132 North Street! Dedication, motivation, and concentrated efforts has resulted in BodyTalk earning the finest reputation for being the "most professional and responsible" tanning salon on the North Shore, In October of 1994, we opened the second location at 17 Washington Street in Peabody. Wait a minute, I just said "we" and you don't know anything about me yet, so let me tell you a little about me... I am Pamela Zerber, Robins business partner. I have been a partner in the business for the past 4 years and have loved every minute of it. I went to college for communications and received my MBA from Renssalaer Polytechnic University. Prior to working with Robin I was a marketing manager for a fortune 500 company. However, I gave up my career and bought my first house on North Street in pursuit of my dream to become an entrepaneur. So now that we're all up to date on who we are and where we came from, let me tell you where we're going... We're going to make 132 North Street one of the most beautiful experiences in Salem! Yes I said "experiences" because that's what we're all about, appealing to all of your senses through your experience the minute your eyes come in contact with our dream house. I know you must be confused, so let me explain how we perform "miracles." You know how it takes a family and love to make a house a home, well we believe that it takes a home to create that warm fuzzy feeling when you walk into our shoppes. That's why we choose to locate our shoppes in 100+ year old homes. We bring you back to the days when there were specialty shoppes that were warm and inviting, where you were treated as someone "Special," and around every corner was a new discovery. Robin and I hand select every single item that we sell in our store, all 2,634 of them at last count. We specialize in custom made wreaths and floral arrangements, irresistible baby gifts, hand painted furniture Z and other special treasures to give as gifts or to use as home decor. Our staff is at your service to ensure that your visit with us is nothing short of spectacular and we go out of our way to please. Specialty gift wrapping is our signature, and a tell tale sign that your gift came from "A Special Place." Now I'll bet your wondering how does tanning fit in with all of this? If you think about it, the store I just described to you sounds warm, inviting and relaxing, right? Well Heliotherapy, otherwise know as light therapy, is the positive effects of exposure to W light. Since there are too many positive effects to mention here, Ill just mention a few.. Heliotherapy or Tanning has been known to; Reduce Stress, Promote Weight Loss, Help Lower Blood Pressure and Resting Heart Rate, Increase Self-Esteem, Reduce Risk of Catching a Cold, Reduce Acne, Psoriasis and Osteoporosis... As a matter of fact, many of our guests tan with us as a result of a Doctor recommending that they tan for a variety of reasons ranging from depression to psoriasis. Many of our other guests tan with us simply because it "makes them feel good." We always promote responsible tanning and ensure that all of our guests use our facilities in moderation. The way we fit our Heliotherapy Salon or Tanning Salon into the tranquil setting of our beautiful store is by separating the two by the use of two levels. The shoppe and boutique is located on the first level and the Tanning Salon is located on the second level. Our guests are customarily escorted up the front grand staircase to their own private tanning room where they can relax and take in all of the benefits of Heliotherapy. Each one of our Tanning Rooms is decorated to the "Nines" using the very finest furnishings synchronized to create a separate theme for each room. Personal CD players with headphones, wet naps and cool spritz in every room make every visit a treat. We even adorn each pillow with an "After Tanning Mint" to cap off your experience. If you've never tried indoor tanning, you've never truly relaxed. We always offer a complimentary visit to ensure that everyone has the chance to experience Heliotherapy first hand. If you can't wait for our location on North Street to open this November, then Robin and I personally extend an invitation for you to experience our Peabody location at 17 Washington Street, that is if you haven't been there already! Our Peabody store will bring this story to life before your eyes. Maybe you've already heard about us from your friends or have seen the pictures and stories written about us in the Salem Evening News. If you've ever driven down Washington Street, you can't miss us, we're the house with all the decorations and flowers out front! Well it was nice chatting with you. We hope to talk with you again soon and look forward to making each of your days a little brighter by putting a smile on your face every time you drive by, walk by or visit our new home at 132 North Street. If you would like to chat with us further, please feel free to call Robin or I at 745-7502. 1 1•Ii a °f r s all ling THE (bu,I U "I I I q OA o ..`._
