Dear Members of the Board:
Over the past 18 months my wife,Kate Leavy, and I have opened three separate year-round retail
businesses within the Salem Urban Renewal Area, and have had the good fortune to present our sign
permits before you. We appreciate this Board's commitment to the physical design of our Downtown,
and its understanding that good design helps create a place where people want to socialize, relax and
shop. Downtown Salem continues to develop into a dynamic commercial center for the residents of
Salem and the surrounding North Shore communities.
Today,we are presenting to the Board a proposal to repair and maintain the base facade of our business
located at 230 Essex St(Scrub). The paint on our building's storefront system is in need of regular
maintenance,so as to prevent a more substantial future repair. We would like to use this as an
opportunity to make a color change to the existing painted surfaces along the linear frontage of 230
Essex, from street grade to the base of the upper facade.
Although our application is isolated to our business at 230 Essex St only,it is our intent to demonstrate
the potential for creating a positive visual impact for the entire building at the northeast corner of Essex
and Washington by adding a color palette that creates definition between businesses, engages pedestrian
activity,and stimulates more private investment
Please find attached a rendering of our store front (230 Essex St)with proposed color changes, and an
image of existing conditions. We have included a rendering of the entire building with possible changes
to the color palette. Please note, the full rendering has been included only to suggest potential facade
changes. The additional colors are NOT intended for review in this application. The property owner
(Salem Renewal) has been included in this discussion and is enthusiastic about potential facade changes in
the near future. We have also included images of similar communities, communities with demanding
historic constraints, where color still plays a role in its downtown vibrancy.
The corner of Essex and Washington Streets is an important business crossroads in Downtown Salem,as
well as the gateway to an important pedestrian and shopping corridor. We hope the Board agrees that
our proposal for 230 Essex (and the potential changes to the entire storefront system) complements the
City's revitalization efforts, and supports Salem's revitalization goals by helping to shape the look, feel and
experience of Salem as a place that attracts residents, business, shoppers and tourists.
Respectfully,
Jamie Metsch
