316 Deft Street (Radiance Aveda) - Proposed signage
RECOMMENDATION:
At their meeting on December 19, 2007 the DRB voted to recommend approval of the
proposed Radiance Aveda sign at 316 Derby Street.
PROPOSAL:
The proposal includes one blade sign located in the existing sign bracket. The
proposed sign is black with white lettering and is 27 inches wide by 35 inches tall.
The sign material is MDO plywood.
Enclosed please find seven copies of the finished design. This sign
is a 3/4-inch thick sign. The radiance lettering is highlighted with a
soft grey in order to bring about a 2 dimensional look. The line of
separation between our name, and who we are has been created
with grey.

At the November meeting, the DRB recommended approval of the proposed Radiance
Aveda sign with the condition that the lettering be incised if physically possible. In the
conversation regarding this issue, it was stated that if the sign is '/a of an inch thick, the
letters could be incised 1/a of an inch. While the existing frame allows for a '/+ inch thick sign,
the applicant's sign fabricator feels that the letters can only be incised if the sign is 2 inches
thick. He also suggested that a thicker board be inserted into the existing frame, extending
horizontally beyond the edges of the frame. Because it is unclear if incising the letters if
physically possible, I have asked the applicant and her sign fabricator to attend the
December meeting.
The attached proposal is revised to include a shadow around the text in order to create the
appearance of three dimensionality. The applicant prefers this design over raised lettering.
The horizontal line is also broken in response to the DRB comments at the November
meeting.

RECOMMENDATION:
At their meeting on November 28,2007 the DRB voted to recommend approval of the
proposed Radiance Aveda sign at 316 Derby Street with the following conditions:
• The lettering shall be incised if the thickness of the sign board can
accommodate incised letters.
• If the lettering can not be incised, the line dividing the sign shall be broken into
multiple lines.
• The background color shall be glossy black
