As you can see from the supplied documents, the sign will carry the Notch logo as well as the communication of our business uses and location (brewery, tap room, beer garden and a directional arrow). The Notch logo is not a specific font, but vintage letter press typography. The remaining fonts are Sentinel.The Notch maroon is Pantone color 7623. 1 would like to place the sign between 281 and 283 Derby Street in the area of the "Left Lane Must Turn Left" sign (detailed in the attached documents). This area is on the street side of the sidewalk and provides 7 feet of clearance for pedestrians. It is directly at the entry of our parking lot from the Derby Street, and 232 feet to our main entrance. Notch Tap Room has its own entrance, as does each business in the building. SRA Decision At its meeting on June 8, 2016 the SRA voted unanimously (5-0) to approve the proposed installation of signage (including a-frame sign) and lighting at 283R Derby Street Notch Brewin as recommended by the DRB. Recommendation At its regular meeting on May 25, 2016 the DRB voted unanimously to recommend approval of the proposed installation of signage (including a-frame sign) and lighting at 283R Derby Street (Notch Brewing). ;y Staff Comments On May 18, 2016 the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) voted to grant a variance to the applicant in order to consider 80 linear feet on the side of his building (acting as its storefront) as frontage. The ZBA approved a plan to allow for 103 square feet of signage to be placed on two elevations of the building as shown in the enclosed plans. The stamped decision is enclosed. Proposal Applicant proposes a series of six signs for his brewery/tap room. All signs will be painted white against the brick fagade. The applicant also proposes to place a wooden a-frame sign at the entrance to the driveway, in front of Waters and Brown, on Derby Street. Complies? Portable Sign Requirements Y N ? The Zoning Enforcement Officer had stipulated that the building's legal frontage is on Derby Street, and that Brother's Deli occupies the building's signage allowance. The applicant is seeking to have his storefront fagade facing (80 Linear feet) facing the parking lot (and Congress Street beyond) and the rear elevation facing the South River considered as frontage. The Department of Planning supports the notion of considering the parking lot side as frontage, given that the spirit of the Salem Sign Ordinance derives a calculation of signage that corresponds to storefront length. We do not necessarily agree that the South River should be considered frontage for the purposes of signage allowance. Assuming the ZBA grants relief to the applicant in the form of allowing the parking lot elevation to be considered frontage, the applicant will be allowed a total of 140 sf of building signage. The application as currently presented meets that standard, as well as Commercial Design Guidelines. The applicant is requesting that the sign be placed well beyond 10 ft of his entrance, which is ordinarily not allowed. That being said, the DRB/SRA has flexibility to allow for placement of the signage beyond 10 it if it feels that extenuating circumstances make this necessary (or acceptable). Chris Loring,petitioner, presented the petition. 3. Notch Tap Room LLC is located at the rear of the building on 283 Derby Street. 4. The Building Commissioner ruled that the allowable signage at the property, based on the frontage of along Derby Street,is completely occupied by Brothers Taverna. 5. The petitioner is requesting a Variance to install 103 square feet of signage on the building along the Congress Street and North River sides of the building, where the business is located at the rear of the building. 6. The petitioner testified that the hardship is that vendors will not be able to deliver goods without knowing where the business is located, wholesalers need to know cohere the location is to pick up finished goods and for consumers to know the location of the facility. 7. 'There is 79.9 linear feet along the fa4ade where Notch Tap Room is located. 8. The requested relief, if granted, would allow signage for this business located at the rear of the property. 9. At the public hearing, one (1) member of the public spoke in favor and none in opposition to the Petition. The Salem Board of Appeals, after careful consideration of the evidence presented at the public hearing, and after thorough review of the petition, including the application narrative and plans, makes the following findings: City of Saleni Board of Appeals June 1.2016 Project:283 Rear Derby Street Page 2 of 2 Findings Sign Variance: I. Literal enforcement of the provisions of the Ordinance would create a substantial hardship to the applicant as the Ordinance is not really applicable for a circumstance and vendors, wholesalers and consumers need to know the location of this facilinv. 3. The desired relief may not be granted without nullifying or substantially derogating from the intent of the district or purpose of the City of Salem Zoning Ordinance. On the basis of the above statements of facts and findings, the Salem Board of Appeals voted five(5) in favor (Peter A.
