I. DESIGN OF SIGNS
A. Components of Each Sign
Each sign will be manufactured as a single unit. Individual signs, with the
exception of the signs numbered will be visually delineated into different panels (there
will be no physical separation between panels). Each panel will consist of four
components: a) the border, b) the symbol area, c) the text area, and d) an arrow (see
figure 1).
B. Background and Text-Colors
Each sign will have a white reflective vinyl border, white reflective vinyl text,
white reflective symbols, and a colored background. The color of the background will be
specified within Section III Individual Signage Specifications.
C. Text Style, Justification and Size
All text will be Helvetica Medium and left justified. Each sign will have all text
beginning 1.5" from the left edge of the text area, and have upper case letters 3.5" high
and lower case letters 2.5" high. All other text locations and sizes will be specified
individually.
D. Text Spacing
All text will be proportionally spaced.
E. Arrow Size and Placement
The direction of each arrow is indicated on the individual sign specifications. The
direction each arrow points is indicated on a 360 degree scale, with 360 degrees being
straight up. Each arrow will conform to the arrow specifications in figure 2.
F. Symbol and Graphics
Camera ready art work will be provided by the City for all graphics to be located
in the symbol area. The manufacture will be responsible for determining the most
effective method for transferring this information onto each sign. It is not required that
the symbols be made of a reflective material, however the material must have a 5-7 year
expected life. All of the National Park Service arrowhead symbols specified will be
provided by the owner. These emblems will be on vinyl sheeting. The manufacture will
be responsible for installing this emblem on the individual signs.
G. Borders
G. Borders
Each sign will have a .75" white reflective border around the perimeter. There
will also be a .75" white reflective border between the symbol and text areas, and
between individual panels.
H. Sign Corners
All signs will have radius corners. The radius of each corner shall be 2".
1. Reverse Side
All signs will be single sided. The reverse side of each sign will have a green
painted finish, and the manufactures identification mark with manufacture dale in the
lower left corner.
J. Massachusetts Department of Public Works

sign type D-6 unless other specifications have been stated (see Section 828 of the
Standards and Specifications for Highways and Bridges).
K. Colors
