Bill Luster , Acting City Planner City of Salem Planning Board One Salem Green Salem, MA 01970 RE: Signage at 441-445 Highland Ave. Salem, for Extra Space Storage Dear Mr. Luster, As you know, last Thursday I received word from our sign contrac- tor , Mr . Peter Ginsberg of ALCO Sign Company, that there was an apparent delay in obtaining a sign erection permit from the City of Salem for the above referenced property. In the development and operation of a self-storage business such as the one we are building on Highland Avenue, two things are critical to effective advertising of the property: first, a good yellow page ad and second, the best possible on-site signage . We have had our yellow page ad for the property in place for some- time now and agreed as a condition of the special permit issued by the Planning Board last March 10 , 1988 , to have the Planning Commissioner review and approve our signage for the property prior to erecting it. Initially, our sign contractor' s plans were to erect an exterior lit, double sided metal sign and marquee. However, we decided to upgrade our sign in Salem to an interior lit sign, one that would have a more professional appearance even though such a sign would cost us significantly more money. It was my understanding that our proposed sign plan came within the City of Salem signage regulations and would have been ap- proved by you as submitted, however; you have requested of ALCO Sign and us that something smaller be proposed, possibly even a ground level , wood sign. First , the six-foot high wood fence between our property and Bob ' s Fried Clams would block the view of the sign from south bound traffic . Second, the line of sight enabling north bound traffic to safely negotiate a turn into the approved southern ingress for the property would be detrimentally effected if the sign was reduced to ground level . Therefore , to save ourselves and our sign contractor unknown number of drafts of potentially approvable sign plans , we respectfully ask for your written decision based on city sign ordinances as to why you want a ground-level wood sign and/or why our proposed sign pian is unacceptable . Your timely response would be appreciated as we anticipate open- ing up for business shortly and wish to have our sign in place as soon as possible. Thank you for your assistance in this regard.
