BUILDING FRONTAGE: 40 linear feet
MAXIMUM ALLOWED: 80 square feet (In a non-residential district with less than 100
feet to the centerline of the abutting street, the maximum sign
area is twice the building frontage)
PROPOSED SIGNAGE: Two painted wall signs. The first painted wall sign is
proposed on the Hersey Street facade consisting of the
business name,the words "Restoration + Repair" and a
graphic of a welder. The approximate dimensions are 40 feet
by 12 feet for a total area of 480 square feet. The second
painted wall sign is proposed on the side of the building that
faces toward Canal Street. It consists of the business name
and the words "Restoration + Repair." The approximate
dimensions are 13 feet by 3 feet for a total area of 39 square
feet. The text is proposed as orange on a black background
and the graphic of the welder is multi-colored.
TOTAL AREA OF SIGN(S): 519 square feet of new signage
COMMENTS: Included in the Salem Sign Ordinance's definition of sign area is
the following:
For a sign painted upon or applied to a building,the area shall
be considered to include all lettering, wording,and
accompanying designs or symbols,together with any
background of a different color than the natural color of the
building.
Therefore, the graphic of the welder is included in the sign area
calculation. The total proposed sign area of 519 square feet exceeds
the permitted maximum of 80 square feet by 439 square feet.
RECOMMENDATION: Because the proposal exceeds the maximum sign area permitted,
there is no basis for approval. I recommend the application be
rejected.
