The Building Department has received reports of recent construction/renovation work at
your property at 11 Savoy Road. Recent observation of the property supports these
reports.
There are no current Building Permits on file for this address. Lack of a permit is a
violation of the Massachusetts State Building Code. See below:
780 CMR Massachsetts State Building Code
SECTION 105 PERMITS
105.1 Required. It shall be unlawful to construct, reconstruct, alter, repair, remove or demolish a
building or structure; or to change the use or occupancy of a building or structure; or to install or
alter any equipment for which provision is made or the installation of which is regulated by this code
without first filing an application with the building official and obtaining the required permit.
All work at this location must cease immediately and remain stopped until the Building
Department has been satisfied that proper construction permits have been applied for, and
issued to, appropriately licensed personnel. No work may be undertaken without written
approval from the Salem Building Department.

Dear Ms Lenhart.
According to our records and based on an inspection by Assistant Building Inspector,
Tom McGrath, the property at 11 Savoy Road is a pre-existing non-conforming 2 family
dwelling and can continue to be used as such.
During his inspection Mr. McGrath noted the unrated wood door connecting the attic
rooms of both units. This is a violation of the Building Code 780 CMR 5317 re: Dwelling
Unit Separation. You are hereby directed to remove said door and infill the opening with
fire-rated drywall and file a Building Permit application for the work before conveyance
of the property.
