Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. 9 Warren Street is a simple l -se of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, one of the largest and latest houses on this block o: enerally modest Greek Revival style houses. Set on a large, open lot with its end elevation close to the street,it is a two-story house on a rectangular plan with a two-story gabled side ell extending two bays south from the west comer, and a two-story flat-roofed section at the southeast. The main block of the house is three bays wide by two bays deep. It has a side-gable roof pierced by a skylight(front slope), and two interior chimneys at the rear slope. The tall, slender chimney proportions are characteristic of the mid-to late-nineteenth century. The walls have been covered with asbestos siding. The center entry stands at the head of a brick stoop, and consists of a modem paneled door set in a Colonial Revival surround with a leaded semi-circular fanlight, fluted Doric pilasters, and an open pediment. Windows have 2/2 sash, with slightly projecting molded frames. Other features include projecting eaves with small Italianate brackets, and cornice returns. Alterations include the asbestos shingled walls,a one-story,hip-roofed screened porch(southeast comer),the stoop, and a two-bay shed dormer(W),making it one of the more altered buildings in the McIntire District. An iron fence extends across the north lot line, and the northeast comer of the lot is paved. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE _see continuation sheet Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. The first owner of the house at 9 Warren Street was Orrin.F.Thompson,whose father Henry,a teamster, purchased the land through to Broad Street in 1829 from James Stone, bricklayer. Henry j Thompson is believed to have constructed the house at 30 Broad Street c.1830. Orrin Thompson lived at 30 Broad Street in 1873,while the 1881 city directory listed him at 9 Warren Street, suggesting that 'p the house was built between 1878 and 1881. The 1874 atlas did not show 9 Warren, but 30 Broad Street and two outbuildings were shown owned by O.F.Thompson. Thompson continued to own both properties until his death between 1911 and 1925. The 1872 directory listed Orrin Thompson as a clerk working at 167 Essex Street, which was the Herbert S. Bull Variety Store. By 1881,Thompson was a clerk in Boston. A gap in Thompson's occupancy of 9 Warren occurred in 1884,when the house was occupied by James F. Potter, a currier, and the stable(presumably one of the above mentioned outbuildings)by W. B.Kezar. (A Kezar owned 17 Warren Street in 1874). In 1897 and 1910,Thompson lived at 9 Warren along with Mrs. M. A. Longley, widow of Edmund W.who had also been a clerk in Boston.Later occupants of the residence included Richard O.Seamans,an accountant(1930);and Richard West, director of Salem Hospital(1950). The house is currently a single-family residence. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES x see continuation sheet Droste,Mark. House Report for 30 Broad Street. Prepared for Historic Salem,Inc. Salem, 1994.
