HIST. COP _ ,. BUILDING FORM Sf1y•3g Ggp ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. St. Theresa's Chapel is a 1 1/2-story,gablefront building with a T-shaped plan. The chapel is sheathed in wood shingles and set above a concrete foundation. Projecting from the center of the facade is a flat-roofed,closed porch set above a set of concrete steps with a wrought iron railing. The original paneled door has been replaced with double metal doors with inset crosses. A set of five transom lights originally capped the door;these have been replaced with a plexiglass transom. Fluted strips support a plain frieze. Above the entrance is a Palladian-like window consisting of a central 6/6 window,capped by a semicircular divided fanlight with central keystone. On either side of the 6/6 window is a 2/2 window strip. A small gold cross rises from the front of the asphalt-shingled roof which displays shallow eaves on its gablefront. Each of the side elevations is four bays wide with paired 6/6 windows flanked by shutters. Basement openings contain 3 x 2 windows. Set at right angles at the rear of the front block is a single-story transept. There is a single 6/6 window on the east wall adjacent to the main block and a Palladian window on each of the gable ends. The rear elevation has a divided oculus tenured in the gable. The parcel which the chapel stands on has a depth which extends from Lafayette Street to Sununit Avenue. The chapel is setback about 150 feet from Summit Avenue. The Lafayette Street frontage is currently vacant and the entire area around the chapel is paved. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Describe the history oflhe building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners,'occuponts played within the community. St. Theresa's Chapel was built by St. Joseph's Church in 1946-7 under the administration of Rev. Father Eli Bamaud. Mass. Division of Inspection records indicate that the building was designed by Pitman&Co., who filed a plan in December 1945. The building was erected to lessen the distance which parishioners in upper South Salem had to travel to the train I church. The majority of parishioners of this Roman Catholic church are Franco-American. Inside the chapel,a hand carved eagle carved by J. Albert Jeffery, adorns the pulpit. The chapel was renovated in 1969 at which time the original asphalt I shingle exterior was replaced with wood shingles. It ceased being used regularly about 1988. Historically,the land our which the parcel stands was part of 273 Lafayette Street. The late 19th century house at 273 Lafayette Street wis removed after 1970.
