Several other nearby houses were also updated during the mid-19th century by the addition of Greek Revival style doo-frames. Specification of the mortar and repointing techniques for the fieldstone foundation will be very important The foundation is a highly visible component of this house and repointing should not detract from the visual appearance of the uufieldstone. L The applicant is also proposing a new paint color scheme for the house. The house is currently pale yellow with white trim, black windows and a dark gray roof. The new paint scheme is a significant change to a dark eggplant body with black trim and deep turquoise door. (NOTE:The Aubergine paint chip as shown below appears slightly darker than actual color. In reality, there is a more pronounced color difference between the Aubergine and the Black.) There is precedent in the McIntire District for dark color schemes, including houses at 26 Beckford Street(11h story gambrel-roofed cottage)and 112-114 Federal Street(3-story Federal style house). SEP 2 9 IVIA a. HIST. Comm. JL BUILDING FORM 8f 5t}X.p, , 53 Summer Street ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION see continuation sheet. Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This two-and-a-half-story, five-bay, center-entry, gambrel-roofed house is orie bay deep and has a two-and-a-half-story ell under an extension of the main roof on the southern end of the rear, with a one-story section to its north. On the rear slope of the roof is a pair of interior chimneys. Eaves are close with gable returns. Window frames are molded and window sash are 6/6. Second story windows are positioned with their tops directly at the eaves. The main decorative feature of the building is the door frame of the main entrance. A mid-19th century update, it is Greek Revival in style and is of the pilaster/architrave/cornice type with short sidelights. Several other nearby houses in the same neighborhood also were updated during the mid 19th century by the addition of Greek Revival style door frames. An enclosed, gable-roofed entry porch of uncertain date shelters the entrance on the south side. Features that indicate a possible 18th century date are the close eaves and windows at the eaves on the second level. The gambrel roof, if it is original, is also a feature commonly used in the 18th century and not associated with the Greek Revival style. It is unclear whether an overhang on ,.) the east facade of the rear ell might relate to an early portion of the structure. Further documentary and physical research will be necessary to better understand the age of this house and changes that have been made to it over time. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE See continuation sheet. Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state history. Include uses of the building and the roles) the owners/occupants played within the community. According to earlier survey work, there is a date painted on the chimney of this house which is "1756". While it cannot be assumed that this is the accurate construction date, the house does appear that it could have been built in the 18th century. The Visitors Guide to Salem states that Sarah Peabody (1810-1871) , Nathaniel Hawthorne's mother, was born here. Identity as her birthplace would also suggests a possible late 18th-century construction date. The 1851 map records this hoise as part of Jonathan Preston's property. Preston died before 1866, but his widow, Sarah, remained in residence. At the same time, his son, John Preston, who lived on Mt. Vernon Street, operated a bakery in this building. Jonathan Preston, Jr. , a tinsmith, lived next door at 55 Summer Street. The 1869 directory lists John as still having his bakery at 53 Summer Street, but his mother is no longer listed. Preston continued tc use the house for his bakery during the 18709, but in 1882 another baker, BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES X See continuation sheet. Hope you have a nice weekend! As mentioned in our initial Historic Commission meeting, our current windows have completely failed so severely in just 25 years that new construction windows are required-they cannot be repaired or restored. Discussions with The Window Woman, along with 5 other carpenters, confirmed that they cannot be restored, they must be replaced. Below are details regarding our window project: Window Series: Pella Architect All-Wood Exterior with ILT(simulated divided light). Will have physical sample for meeting. This window is on the Commissions Guidelines for as an approved window. • Sills: Historic 2"wood sill to match dimensions of attached photo from 1967. Will have physical sample of 2" sill for meeting. • Muntin/Grills: match existing - majority are 6/6. Grill size to match existing 5/8" (photo attached). Non-removable Grills. • Sizes: All windows to match existing sizes- no changes whatsoever in dimensions • Hardware: spoon-style locks in bronze, per guidelines • Trim: All-wood cedar to match existing 3.5"flat trim with backband. • Repair: Rotted wood behind clapboard is expected. When rot is found, remove clapboard to repair rot and reset original clapboard • Colors: All exterior trim, backband &sills to be white. Exterior sashes & grills to be black. Having black sashes and grills will make the simulated divided light look even more authentic. • Window Mockup: attached mockup of what the final window will look like. Note the backbanding will not be flat as seen in the mockup-it will match existing profile(photo attached of existing backband profile for reference) Our current windows are not historic; they are from the 1990's. They aren't all-wood; they have vinyl casings, which is seen in the attached photo. Sill size was just over 1", so they were not historically accurate either(however most sills are completely rotted off all the way to the sash to the point where insulation is exposed). We hope to gain approval on August 5th so we can begin immediately. Every rainstorm makes the situation worse, pulling off large chunks of trim and sill, getting more water into the structure of the house and compromising the integrity of the framing. We have provided details on everything we could get our hands on with all Guidelines taken into consideration and look forward to our discussion on Wednesday. Certificates of Non-applicability are used for projects that result in no change in color, material, des'gn, location or outward appearance. When I receive these applications, I 1 forward them to Salem Historical Commission members and, if there are no questions or objections, I issue the Certificate. If there is a question or objection, I either schedule discussion of the application at an upcoming meeting or advise the application how to proceed. In this case, one of the members states that the roof shingles of 53 Summer Street are "strip shingles",which are kind of like 3-tab shingles but with vertical separations that are not so pronounced. Your application is proposing GAF Timerline, which are not 3- tab. They are typically called "architectural', which have uneven, angled tabs, which are different from what is currently on the house. Therefore, I have not been authorized to issue a Certificate of Non-applicability. There are a couple options... • You can re-submit an application for a Certificate of Non-applicability for a 3-tab shingle in black or charcoal grey(such as GAF Marquis WeatherMax) or • I can change your current application to an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness and put it on the May 4h meeting agenda for the board to review and vote on. Please note, however, that they may still require you to use a 3-tab shingle. Please let me know how you would like to proceed. Feel free to call me with any questions. Thank you, -Jane Jane A.
