Amendment-Installation of Gas Conversion Equipment 28 July 2010 • On 15 June,we requested a certificate of appropriateness for venting associated with a new gas fired high efficiency boiler for the Bowditch House. That certificate was granted on 8 July. • The previous request assumed that we would install the vent pipes for the boiler to the north(left) side of the window in the west(back)wall of the Bowditch House at about four feet above grade. • Since then, our plumber suggested that we change the vent design. He now recommends that we install the vent pipes at least seven feet above grade in the south(right)comer of the west wall. The two vent pipes will be respectively 4"and 3" in diameter and will be painted grey to match the body color of the house. Our preference is to install the vent pipes so that the tops are at 8'6" above grade, parallel to the top of the window. • The reasons for the change are: o High efficiency boilers vented seven feet above grade do not require carbon monoxide detectors be installed throughout the house. Our revised proposal minimizes CO risk and eliminates costs of CO detectors o The vent pipes will be located farther from the window per the previous SHC certificate. o The vent pipes run will be shorter so we are less likely to have venting issues. o The vent will be farther from Eaton Place and the parking lot and less visible o The pipe(particularly the air intake)will be well above the snow line and well away from the area where it can be damaged or blocked by snow from plows clearing the parking lot. • We are therefore asking to amend the precious certificate. Exterior impacts should be small and are shown in the enclosure. There would be two changes: • The three oil vent and fill pipes on the north side of the building will be removed.A gas service pipe will be added in the area of the existing oil pipes. The meter will be installed in the basement. The gas company requires that the gas pipe enter the building two feet below ground to avoid exposure to damage so the installation will not be visible. All three existing holes will be plugged. • An exhaust vent for the boiler will be installed on the back(west)side of the building about 18"to the left of the window and about four feet above grade level as required by code. Two designs have been discussed: • A single six"vent with a circular cap. This is our preferred solution. However, it may no longer be available. If so,the fallback is • Two separate pipes, respectively 4"and 3"separatedby a distance of 12".These pipes would be covered by a single rectangular cap.
