March 5, 2003
To the Historical Commission:
We are applying for removal of a non-working chimney at the rear ell of our
kitchen wing. The wing itself is built directly on the ground, and consequently has
caused difficulty for us with regard with heating and cooling. As we are planning
a gut renovation, we have consulted several contractors to assess the most
practical and economical way to make the kitchen wing habitable. We originally
intended to begin reconstruction last may, as is evidenced by our original
application for chimney removal. Upon consideration,we decided to postpone the
project until obtaining further estimates and opinions. The chimney itself is not in
use, and indeed is walled in, creating a barrier between the two small rooms of the
existing kitchen. This makes the space difficult to work/live in.
We have consulted with three separate masonry companies, in an attempt to
assess the practicality of supporting the chimney cap from within the kitchen ell
by use of steel beams, and were advised by all three that the age and vulnerability
of the structure itself would make interior support both structurally risky, and
prohibitively expensive. Inserting a steel beam would also compromise an already
low ceiling height, and obstruct a linear view from a design perspective. It is with
this information in mind that we are seeking to remove the chimney,as
incorporating it in the design of the renovated space will be a hardship for us, both
in terms of the lack of usable space in the kitchen ell, and the structural and
financial risk involved in supporting the stack , as opposed to removing it.
Sincerely,
Ron and Ziggy Hartfelder
