Vents to be painted to match roof color. Staff Comments: The applicant originally intended to have a ridge vent installed to ventilate the attic, the preferred option for venting historic buildings. However, upon closer inspection, the applicant's contractor discovered that a ridge vent could not be installed because of the roofs construction. The applicant is now seeking to install a total of four(4)vents on the roof-3"mushroom"style vents and 1 flat mount vent. All four vents would be placed on the rear slope of the roof and would be painted dark gray to match the color of the roof. However, this house sits perpendicular to Lynn Street, rendering the rear roof slope visible from both Lynn Staff Memo to Historical Commission—October 26,2017 3 Lynn Street—Roof vents Page 2 Street and Andover Street A large tree between#3 Lynn and its neighbor to the north#5 Lynn Street would provide seasonal screening of the vents. The Commission's Guidelines only states that venting options will be approved on a case by case basis and may include ridge vents, louvered vents or soffit vents. I did not find any record of the Commission reviewing mushroom vents in the past I asked the applicant to provide a roof plan indicating exactly where the vents will be placed. He stated that according to his contractor, the vents can be installed at any location on the rear slope within 4'of the ridge of the roof. Placing the vents closer to the rear of the building(see photo on page 3)would help to limit their visibility from the street I .I tr - View of rear(north)slope of roof from the district(Andover and Lynn Streets) Staff r to Historical Commission- October . / 3 Lynn Street-Roof vents e 3 °rr View of rear roof slope from Bridge Street-Vents to be installed on main roof NOT rear ell 5 I r i p` 'Dattee Stamp NIT Salem Historical Commission F, cc, For Ottice Use Only APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS Pursuant to the Historic District's Act (M.G.L. I . ], j Ii_ `n, 1', ,, I it-M I IS C Sr$_'.1 fio P.1,,!, Pi I . VolL N-I)I, I .._i.a 'j,146;. has a patented engineered design to create CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) of air flow with no moving parts. It is an excellent choice to exhaust attic heat in the summer to reduce hot attic temperatures. And, to exhaust moisture in the winter to keep the attic dry and cool to preserve attic insulation and prevent ice dams. The Aura Ventilation product line is made of durable rust free aluminum. Model AV-12-C2 is made up of 3 components: the vent head, collar and flange. Model AV-12-C2 is a 12 in. Dia. vent with a 2 in. collar height and 18 in. x 18 in. square flange. It has 113 sq. in. of Net Free Air Space. Its low profile is best used for a sloped roof. When air moves against the louvers of the outer cylinder it is directed to create a circular airflow. The louvers of the inner cylinder face in the same direction as the air movement created by the outside cylinder. This air movement creates a venturi effect which produces a vacuum or negative pressure to pull air from within the attic space. The vent head has a flat one piece spun lid that prevents rain and snow from entering the vent verses the turbine vent which is open to the sky and allows rain water to enter in "no wind" conditions. 5 year warranty. • Inner vertical louvers keeps insects, birds and squirrels from entering the vent allowing optimal air flow and no maintenance • Use on pitched roofs ranging between 3/12 and 12/12 • Round aerodynamic design can with stand harsh weather and wind forces of up to 200 mph • Mill finish aluminum color that will continually have a long lasting clean appearance • Vent head is removable for easy installation • Noiseless - does not require electricity to exhaust air from attics spaces • Ventilation rule 1:300 (1 per sq. ft. of attic space): 450 sq. ft. for exhaust • Helps to reduce energy costs Info & Guides • Installation Guide • Warranty You will need Adobe&Acrobat® Reader to view PDF documents. April 21,2003 RECEIVED Salem Historic Commission APR 1 Mi 120 Washington Street Salem,Massachusetts 01970 DEPT.OF PLANNING 6 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Re: Request for Certificate of Appropriateness Fence Replacement at 3 Lynn Street Dear Jane Guy and Members of the Historic Commission: We are writing to request a Certificate of Appropriateness for the replacement of an existing fence with one of a different design that is historically compatible, for our home at 3 Lynn Street(built in 1783,with a wing added 100 years later). Our primary objectives are to build a fence that prevents our children and dog from having easy street access when they go in and out of the kitchen door,to provide a higher degree of privacy for our patio area and yard;and to conceal garbage barrels from the street, while also being simple, unpretentious, and historically suitable. We've chosen a style with flat slats and a basic fence cap,and minimal decorative posts, which is common in the McIntyre District. We include photographs of three similar fences in our neighborhood. "Phis type is also prevalent in Edgartown Massachusetts, where the repetition of the style provides continuity to its neighborhoods. Chas will emulate ones directly across the street(on the Lynn Street side)of 122 Federal Street, and Monroe Street behind the library, for size of slats and spacing. The fence we're planning will be 3'-8"tall,painted white (like the trim of our house). There will be capped posts (similar to the fence at the corner of Monroe&Federal Streets) at the ends, and at the gate entrance. Any other interim support posts will be concealed. We will remove the existing fence, which is in decrepit condition, and locate the new fence farther forward,at the edge of the house,as shown in the enclosed plan view of our property. The revised layout and gate location provides us with the safety we need and makes the best use of our available space for both patio and parking. For your review,we have put together several photographs of our property and of prototype fences from neighborhood examples, plan and elevation drawings, and an application-form for a Certificate of Appropriateness. We hope this will give you ample information for the meeting on May Th,and look forward to talking with you at that time. If you have any questions in advance, please don't hesitate to call me at home (978-744-6004) or at my office (978-656-3662). Thank you. Sincerely, H.Jeffrey Brandt and Patricia S. The existing windows are double-paned awning windows mounted on their sides. We wish to install 2 windows, with a center mullion, from the Brosco line of wood framed true divided lights, Boston layout,6/6 lights, with narrow muntins, mounted in the same opening as the existing window. The window location is the northwest side of our home,on the back wing in the first floor kitchen. The top of the windows will align with the adjacent window on that wing, and casings and decorative trim will match the flat casings and band molding of the rest of the house. Because of the size and location we're quite limited in our options, and feel that this is the best choice we will be able to provide in character with the age and style of our home. On the interior, kitchen cabinets and counter make other options very difficult. We called for guidance on what information would be helpful for our application, and per those suggestions include several enclosures: 1. Application Form for a Certificate of Appropriateness 2. Manufacturers specifications for the windows 3. Photographs of the window from the street, and the side door of our neighbors at 7 Lynn Street. Thank you for your attention to this application and for arranging the public notice so that we can be ready for the meeting on June 5th. Please feel free to call me at home (978-744-6004) or at my office if you have any questions (978-656-3662). We look forward to talking with you at the hearing.
