On June 20, 1989, it was observed that the clapboards had been installed on the four dormers and that the color of the clapboards is considerably darker blue than the body color of the house. If it is your intention to paint the body of the house the blue color of the dormers, you should apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness for this change. If you do not intend to apply for new paint colors, the dormers should be repainted to match the existing body color as stipulated in your Certificate of Appropriateness dated May 1 , 1989. Please respond to this letter within fourteen (14) days. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. RespgCtfllya,' \Jl )` THE SALEM HISTORICAL COMMISSION Annie C. Harris, Chairman Salem Historical Commission One Salem Green Salem, Massachusetts 01970 Re: Attached photocopy of your June22 , 1989 , letter to my mother, Mrs. Hope F. Edelstein Dear Annie C. Harris : Your letter makes apparent the need for your historical enlightenment. Our family' s roots in Salem date back at least as far and likely farther than do yours. The property which my mother, Mrs. Hope F. Edelstein, owns has belonged to our family for several generations; its grounds and improvements always well maintained. We have a high stake in Salem' s rich heritage and in the preservation of such. In this light, your letter of June 22 , 1989 , deeply concerns me. In this instance, at least, your knowledge of building materials and in their behavior appears to be severely lacking. The installation used for the siding of the four dormers is of the same material and color as that of the body of the house when originally installed several years ago. Salt air and weather have caused the body color to fade to its present color, as they will over time to the four dormers. I suggest that, in the future, you be significantly more knowledgeable, thorough and responsible. The preservation of Salem' s great heritage depends on efforts such as those of the Historical Commission. This matter is now closed. Per my mother' s request, any and all future correspondences shall be directed exclusively to me at the address listed on this letterhead. In no other way shall communications James F.
