Proposal for FENCE at 6 Hamilton Street, Salem, MA Owner: Latta Realty Trust(Lynn L. Frothingham & Charles L. Newhall) Location, Context& Existing Conditions: The proposed fence will be a side fence, located between the driveways and gardens of# 6 Hamilton Street and# 4 Hamilton Street and running back to the end of the property line, approximately 112 feet. The fence will be located inside the McIntire Historic District, between a Colonial Revival double house (6 & 8 Hamilton Street) and a 1860s (approximate date) clapboard house. These properties were "carved"out of the gardens of the Charles Hoffman property on Chestnut Street, with#4 built as a"gardener's cottage" for Hoffman and# 6 & #8 built by Stephen H. & Margaret Duncan Phillips (1891). 6 & 8 Hamilton Street have a McIntire-style front yard fence. The garden at#4 Hamilton Street is a Japanese-style garden with a small pond, created in the 1990s, and the garden at# 6 is a simple enclosed garden. The existing fence to be replaced (installed about 1975) is a 4' cedar screen with rounded-board pickets pointed at the top. The posts are also rounded cedar posts that extend approximately 1 inch higher than the stretches. It is currently dilapidated, with several sections missing and others in disrepair. Proposal: This proposal is to replace the aging and dilapidated existing side fence with a more architecturally and historically appropriate fence between#4 and# 6 Hamilton Street. The proposed new fence will maintain the 4' height for the stretches, utilize the existing fence line, and run the same length (approximately 112'). The proposed fence will be constructed primarily of cedar; however, the posts will be pressure-treated. The proposed new fence will be 2"x 3" x 8' white cedar molded backer rails will have I" x 4"x 4' white cedar pickets with I%" spacing, and be capped with a 1"x 2"x 8' fence cap of red cedar. A Brosco 8276 styled (see below)molded I"x 2 "x 8' fir fence cap may be used in place of the red cedar fence cap. The proposed fence will be joined to the posts in the center of the post with a doweled mortise and tennon joint. The finish side will face toward#4 Hamilton Street. The posts will be capped with cedar pyramid caps and will extend above the fence approximately 5". This proposed fence is very similar to the fence across Hamilton Street between# 5 &# 7 Hamilton Street. The fence will be installed unpainted and will be stained with a Cabot colored stain to match the existing fence at# 6 & # 8 Hamilton Street. belowSee the image Drawing . and photograpzap) installed by J.
