Install GAF storm guard leak barrier 36" in valleys of home and at any roof penetration such as chimneys,
/exhaust vents, vent pipes and skylights for added protection against leaks.
Install F-8" drip edge to perimeter of the roof deck. Drip edge helps support the roofing shingle at all edges
of the roof, manages water flow off roof and into gutters, and also protects against wind-driven rain
penetrating the edge of the roof. Available in 3 colors: Mill (Aluminum), Brown, a hite.
Install GAF deck armor to remaining area of the roof that is not covered with GAF storm guard. GAF deck
armor adds another layer of protection against leaks from wind-driven rain. It being extremely breathable,
is moisture escape from attic space and helps preserve your roof deck.
Install GAF ProStart starter shingles at perimeter of roof. This is important because the starter shingle has
additional adhesive which prevents the first row of shingles from blowing upward in heavy winds.
❑ Re-flash chimney: remove and dispose of old flashing, cut into mortar with grinder approximately 8" up
chimney, feed new lead into newly cut mortar joints, install lead in a step-flashing manner, and run
approximately 4" onto roof deck. Seal all edges with Geocell sealant. Lead is used as a flashing material
on chimney because itis very pliable. Lead flashing molds to uneven surfaces and stays in place for
years. RIV ! W V ivt'c V-

Nail locations vary by shingle and roof slope. It is critical to fasten the shingle in the proper locations in
order to achieve desired performance and meet warranty requirements.
All nails that will be used on your roof will be barbed or rough-shanked nails and will be resistant to

In most applications, shingles will receive 6 nails and all nails will be long enough to penetrate min.

STAFF MEMORANDUM
TO: Salem Historical Commission
From: Patti Kelleher
Date: November 16, 2016
RE: 8 Gifford Court-Certificate of Appropriateness
Date Constructed: ca. 1878
Style: Greek Revival/Italianate
One of a three rental houses on Gifford Court constructed by T.J.Gifford in the late 1870s. Gifford owned a
large woodworking business at the end of Carpenter Street on the North River. The inventory form completed
for this house states that it is one of the larger houses on the street with the more vertical proportions
associated with the post-Civil War period of construction. In contrast to its smaller neighbor at#6, 8 Gifford
Court's main entrance has two panel doors,a larger entrance portico and more ornately detailed brackets. In
2014,the previous owner removed asphalt shingle siding to restore the building's original clapboard exterior.

Proposal:
• Replace existing green 3-tab asphalt shingle roof with new architectural shingles. Applicant is seeking
to use GAF Timberline architectural shingles in Charcoal.
Staff Finding:
The applicant is seeking to replace the old 3-tab shingle roof on her house with GAF Timberline asphalt shingles
to match the shingle roof at the abutting 6 Gifford Court(see photo above). According to the Historical
Commission files, the owners of 6 Gifford Court did not receive approval to install a GAF Timberline roof.
Instead, the owners received a Certificate of Non-Applicability to replace a 3-tab asphalt shingle roof in-kind.
6 Gifford Court was sent a Violation letter on November 9,2016.
The Commission has only approved GAF Timberline architectural shingles when a roof is minimally visible from
a public way. (See Certificate of Appropriateness for GAF Timberline shingles at 174 Federal Street, 5/7/14).
The roof at 8 Gifford is highly visible from both Gifford Court and Carpenter Street. Staff notified the applicant
and her roofing contractor about the Commission's Guidelines pertaining to architectural shingles. The
Staff Memo to Historical Commissian

applicant's contractor was asked to provide options for other architectural shingles without angled cuts,

BUILDING FORM 8 Gifford Court
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION See continuation sheet.
Descritre architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings
within the community.
This 2 1/2-story, 2-bay, sidehall-entry, gable-front house has a
turn-of-the-century, flat-roofed addition at the rear with 3 levels Of porches
attached to its north end. Window frames are molded and window sash are 2/2.
This example of late nineteenth century, vernacular architecture is derived
from the Greek Revival style. The gable-front house form, broad eaves, gable
returns and frieze are all of Greek Revival influence. The large overdoor on
scroll brackets and double leafed doors with glazed tops are of
Italianate inspiration.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE see continuation sheet.
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state history. Include uses
of the building and the roles) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Gifford Court was developed around 1878 by T. J. Gifford, who owned a large
woodworking business at the end of Carpenter Street and along the river.
According to an advertisement in the 1884 Essex County atlas, his mill offered
the following services: "Doors, Sash & Blinds, Mouldings and Brackets of all
Patterns constantly on hand and made to order, from Black Walnut, Chestnut, or
other fancy Wood, for House Finish, in all good styles, and cheap as can be
furnished by any other establishment in the State" T. J. Gifford's own
residence was at 18 Mason Street.
j Gifford Court first appears in the 1879 city directory. By that year,
tt the houses at 2-4, 6, and 8 Gifford Court had built and were occupied as
rental properties. All three were constructed in the Italianate style and, no
doubt, displayed products produced at Gifford's mill. Many of the early
tenants also worked in the mill. These properties were later apportioned
among other members of the Gifford family.
This house was probably built in 1878. In 1879 the tenant was
Edwin W. Woodman, a baker. Unlike its neighbor at 6 Gifford, this house has
the more vertical proportions that are associated with the post-Civil War
period of construction. As a larger structure, the main entrance has two
panel doors, a larger portico, and more ornately-detailed brackets.

RE: 2,4,6 and 8 Gifford Court Windows
6 Gifford Court-In June,2001, a Certificate ofNon-applicability was issued to replace existing 2/2 double-hung,
single-glazed,true divided-lite wood windows in-kind at 6 Gifford Court.
8 Gifford Court-In June,2002,a Certificate of Appropriateness was issued to replace all windows at 8 Gifford
Court with new windows to match the windows recently approved and installed under Certificate of fon-
applicability at 6 Gifford Court.
2-4 Gifford Court- In January,2004, the owners of 2-4 Gifford Court applied for a Certificate of Appropriateness to
replace existing windows with new windows to match the windows recently installed at 6 Gifford Court and
approved under prior Certificates ofNon-applicability and Appropriateness at 6&8 Gifford Court.
Following individual site visits and review of files, Commissioners determined that the windows approved for 6
Gifford Court under Certificate of Non-applicability were in-kind replacement of 2/2 true divided-lite,single-glazed,
wood windows. What was installed, however, were 1/1 wood windows with exterior and interior glue-on muntins
simulating 2/2 configuration. These windows are not in compliance with the Certificate of Non-applicability of
June, 2001 and thus, technically in violation. In discussing this matter, Commission members cited problems with
glue-on muntins, including poor performance(falling off at 129 Essex Street),the appearance of the gap between the
interior and exterior muntins and the unpainted sash rebates, which show through the inter-space of the insulated
glass panels.
CONSEQUENTLY, The application to replace windows at 24 Gifford Court with new windows matching those
recently installed at 6 and 8 Gifford Court was not approved. A Certificate of Appropriateness was issued to replace
window sash at 4 Gifford Court and both sash & frames at 2 Gifford Court with new 2/2, double-hung, single-
glazed, true divided-lite wood windows matching those originally installed (and partly surviving) on the house. The
owners of 2-4 Gifford Court (Donna Yates) stated that they did not want to create problems for the owners of 6
Gifford Court.
THEREFORE,on February 4,2004,the Commission unanimously VOTED:
1. To take no action on window violations at 6&8 Gifford Court, in view of the misunderstanding by the property
owners about what had actually been approved in the Certificates of 2001 and 2002, and also in view of the
delay before this misunderstanding and resulting violations were brought to the attention of the Commission.
2. To place a memo in the files of 2,4, 6& 8 Gifford Court summarizing this matter and stating that the 1/1 wood
windows with exterior and interior glue-on muntins,as currently installed at 6& 8 Gifford Court, were installed
without approval of the Commission and are not entitled to be retained inep1r etuity under future Certificates of
Non-applicability.
