Andrus 166 Federal Street
I have long thought about how to redesign my front entry. It is presently of a very plain
architectural type with modest brackets that make the house appear very unbecoming and
as if it doesn't belong on Federal Street. On this street most houses have formal front
entries and some fairly omate entries, as does the magnificent house immediately next
door. My guess is that in the past most houses on Federal Street that had such nondescript
brackets had them removed and replaced by the formal fluted pilasters type of design that
is prevalent elsewhere in Salem as well. I have noticed similarly modest architectural
brackets only on the secondary entries (and back entries)of these houses.
The reason I felt capable of approaching this matter myself is that I have studied both
architecture(at MTI'and Harvard GSD)and art and architectural history, and additionally
was in the MIT graduate structural engineering program for two years back in the 1970s.
I have also been involved in woodworking at MTF as a hobby since 1986. I wanted a
custom-made effect to the front entry that would give the house a substantial classical
look.
About a year ago after I did get approval to repaint the trim on my house, I started to
question whether it was worth it to do repairs to the front entry or redesign before any
repainting. I thought I would take a stab at craving some Ionic style capitals. I need to
add that since I could not ensure success in this venture, there was no way I could even
begin to present a design before the Salem Historical Commission; I also could not make
any assumptions about incorporating these two elements in any formal entry design
without a hands-on attempt.
As it was,the design did evolve according to my abilities in carving and construction. I
had over the years built numerous pieces of traditional style(six-foot high cabinet
mahogany bookcases with plinths and cornices and did some minor cabriole leaf carving,
etc.)furniture since 1986. My architectural sources, besides my general familiarity with
the pertinent architectural styles of Greek and Roman antiquity, renaissance, and
eighteenth-century England, were pattern books from the MIT architectural library and
examples of capitals in Salem, Cambridge, and Boston. I took many pictures of front
entries that appealed to me and had elements that I could adapt. It took me about six
months to hand-carve the capitals out of pine. From there I proceeded part by part,
element by element, each time restudying area examples,to create out of pine an entry
that, I believe, is sufficiently formal to give my house a sense of quiet elegance and
grace.
With the exception of the molding at the very top of the cornice(from Anderson
McQuaid), I made every piece of the bar molding from ideas collected in my surveys of
entryways in Salem and the Boston areas. The top cornice molding is an exact scaled-
down version of the molding at the roof of my house. The major bar molding next down
from the crown, I duplicated from a type of molding elsewhere on the house, and it also
is close in shape to the curved"dentils"below the roof s molding. I carved the oval
SK tti'e w•coyui
rosettes and the swag, and for the ties(or bows)on the latter,1 used a plaster model from
the nineteenth century that I found in an antiques store.
The photographs show the final result primed in white. The brilliant white is too stark for
my house, however. I have settled on a Benjamin Moore Navajo While exterior color,
which is a slightly cream-colored white and the whitest of the off-whites offered by this
company. I had already received approval to use an off-white paint when I met with the
Historical Commission last year. It turns out that my thoughts on painting the trim the
same color as the body of the house(the clapboards are oil stained a putty gray color)
would be inappropriate for the carved formal entry design. Eventually I hope to replace
the Home Depot front door with a custom-made version close to what I drew on the
enclosed elevation plan, and likely made of pine painted a glossy black or oak stained
brown(the same for the storm/screen door).

Dear Commission Members:
I am planning on having the trim of my house on 166 Federal Street painted.
I would like to change the off-white color currently on the trim to a putty gray color that
matches exactly the putty gray color oil stain on the clapboards. I also want to change the
color of the inner window frames (the sashes) and storm window frames and shutters to
black some of the window sashes are presently already painted black and some the same
off-white as the trim. I further want to change the color of the front and back doors to
black.
The effect I am aiming for is a solid putty gray look to the house with black accents to the
inner window frames (sashes and storm window frames), shutters, and doors.
Below is a Polaroid shot of the house and the paint samples. The photo does not
reproduce the colors correctly. The clapboards are in fact the very color of the paint
sample.
