Guy Asst. Community Development Director City of Salem Department of Planning & Community Development 12/18/2003 r 145 Federal SI Heal Pump&Fence January 14,2004 To: Salem Historic Commission From: 145 Federal Street Condominium Trust Re: Heat Pumps and Fence on Flint Street Date: January 14, 2004 This Application for Certificate of Appropriateness is in response to a Notice of Violation dated December 18, 2003 for the installation of air conditioning units. The air conditioning units mentioned in the letter are in anality replacement heat pumps. The previous:Heating units were more than 20 years old and failed to operate except when set to emergency heat; a cold and inefficient and costly mode. The units needed to be replaced before the start of this winter season. We were not aware of the Salem Historic Commission's jurisdiction regarding the replacement of heating units. The property of 145 Federal Street is a comer lot. It is located at the junction of Federal Street and Flint Street. The heat pumps are located in the backyard of the property along Flint Street behind a dilapidated four foot fence that is also more than twenty years old. The proposed solution for concealing the heat pumps and to provide a more aesthetic period look is to replace the existing four foot fence along our backyard and driveway with a six foot colonial tongue and groove fence. The posts will be eight feet apart, (the same as the current fence) and topped with simple pyramid shaped caps. The new fence will be painted the same color white. y °i d a. wr 1 l I I I i IJ Close up oj'the new heating unit viewed, from Flim Street. hup://dinmonddoedesign.com/jmmvoy/hpFcnee.pol' Page I of c 1 g' o" 145 Federal St Heat Pump&Fence January 14,2004 r Oka 11 ' View of the back of 145 Federal Street from Flin[.Street Exam l--s of roposed replacement for fence: a 't71 fj: 11 ' 1 . .
