To Whom It May Concern:
At the request of Stacia Kraft, of 140 Federal Street, Salem, MA, I examined the paint on
the original door shutter from the Greek Revival addition on her house. The door shutter
appears to be original and in its original location, in a protected area under the portico.
The purpose of the examination was to determine the original shutter color on this Greek
Revival shutter and match it to a commercial paint color. Several small samples of paint
were removed from the shutter with a scalpel, and the most complete were cast in a
polyester medium in preparation for microscopic examination. Placing a paint sample in
a cube of polyester allows for examination of the paint sample in cross-section, in which
the wood or other substrate is included and shows all paint layers in sequence. The
sample taken from the shutter and examined under the microscope in visible light at 50X
revealed that there were approximately eight layers of paint on the shutter, the first being
a bright(relatively) green. This green color was matched to a Benjamin Moore
commercial paint color from the Classic Colors palette—BM 594 Peridot. Attached is a
photograph of the shutter paint sample in cross-section at 50X.
Another paint sample was removed from one of the columns, and under the microscope
shows upwards of 30 paint layers, all in the white range of color.
Respectfully submitted,
, v.

Subject: extension for 140 Federal Street
Dear Jane,
I am requesting an extension for our exterior paint approval on 140 Federal Street. We were approved
for a change of color of our exterior shutters to green, but are just getting to the job after much work to
the roofs and structure. Al]of our abutters are the same as when we made the request.
Thanks,
Stacia Kraft
