Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the communt(v. This is a magnificent three story Federal style residence that has been modified with Italianate detailing. Both styles are well represented in the district, and another example of this combination is found at 112-114 Federal Street. The main block is approximately rectangular in plan. 3 by 3 bays.with rear and side(W)ells. The main building has a low ridge hip root;which is pierced by one single and a double brick chimney at the south slope. The symmetrical flushboard facade has robust Italianate ornament such as paneled and rusticated quoins. pedimented window hoods at the first story, flat window hoods at the 2nd and bold segmental hood molds at the third story. The widow hoods and cornice are ornamented with a derail molding. The central enclosed Federal portico has an open pediment set on fluted Doric pilasters. An elliptical fanlight and sidelights with elegant tracery frame a nicely detailed wood panel door. The side elevations are sheathed in clapboard and have simple. molded window surrounds. At the east elevation there is a one-story projecting bay (N bay)with 1/1 sash and the same dentil molding found at the facade. There is also a tripart window in the S bay of the east elevation. The shuttered windows have 6/6 sash except at the 3rd story, which are 3/3. At the west elevation there is a one-story,shed-roofed ell. 2 by 2 bays, with clapboard siding and a tall brick rearwall chimney. Attached to the rear(S)of this ell is a one-story screened porch. At the rear of the main block there is a three story ell which is attached to a 2-story gable roofed clapboard ell. At the east comer of the S elevation there is a one-story, flat roofed porch with jalousie windows topped by transoms. 7 The house appears the same today as it did in Chamberlain's 1938 photograph. This building is set back from the street approximately 8- 10 feet, which is more typical of properties in this block of Federal Street between Monroe J and Flint Streets. It has a particularly large yard for this neighborhood enclosed along Federal St.by an open wood fence with square posts detailed with pilasters. The main posts at the entry and drive also have derails and large ball finials circled with molding. There is also a wood fence along the east and west borders of the lot. This site has some mature landscaping including a large tree in the west side yard A paved drive east of the house with a brick walk leads back to a 3-bay brick carriage house near the southeast comer of the lot. It has a state hip roof, and metal clad double swinging doors. The carriage house appears in this location on the 1897 map,but does not appear on the 1911 map. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE X see continuation sheet Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building and the role(s)the owners/occupants pla}wd within the community. This house was designed ca 1801 by Samuel McIntire for Captain Carpenter,a sea captain and soldier in the Revolutionary War. A fust floor plan of this house is included among the McIntire papers at the Peabody Essex Museum. Carpenter purchased the property in 1801 and presumably built the house at that time. This property was formerly No.61 Federal St. The addresses on Federal Street changed circa 1853-55 and this became 135 Federal Street. It appears as 137 Federal St. on the 1874 and 1897 maps and directories, but was changed again to 135 Federal St. on the 1911 map. After 1828,Michael Shepard a merchant at Central Wharf, purchased the property and remained here at least through 1874. Matthew Robson moved here by 1884,and the Robson family resided here for several decades, from the 1880s until the 1950s. Matthew Robson was treasurer at the Robson Leather Company at 16 Goodhue Street. Although Matthew Robson is listed at this address in the 1884 and 1897 directories, the property owner shown on the 1897 map is Mrs. Mary A Bertram widow of Capt. John Bertram. The Robsons may have been leasing the p--eperty from Mrs.Bertram at that time. By 1911,the Robsons must have INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Community Property Address Salem 135 Federal St. Massachusetts Historical Commission Massachusetts Archives Building 220 Morrissey Boulevard Boston,MA 02125 Area(s) Form No. HU 1568:3796 purchased the property and Edelia R Robson is shown as the owner on the map of that•year. Mary Bertram, formerly Mary Ann Ropes, was the third wife of Captain John Bertram,a wealthy Salem merchant. ship owner, and a generous philanthropist. Mary Bertram owned a number of investment properties in this neighborhood around the turn of the centum including 9 North Street. 364 and 373 Esser Street. 125 and 140 Federal Street and 6 Monroe Street. Mary Bertram and Bertram's daughters donated the mansion at 370 Essex Street to the City of Salem for use as a public library in 1887.
