Architectural Style: Greek Revival
Description:
According to architectural historian Bryant F.Tolles Jr.,the Robert Saunders House together with its neighbor at 121
Federal Street are "the finest local examples of vernacular Green Revival domestic architecture". The Saunders House
features a cross gable roofline,flushboard facade, clapboard sides, wide corner pilasters,a closed pedimented front
gable, and a wide entablature that wraps around the house. The sidehall entry features a recessed vestibule and a
surround with flushboard pilasters supporting a wide entablature with a projecting cornice.The building has 6/6 wood
sash that are likely original to the house. When the property's inventory form was completed in 1996,the building still
had 12-light wood storm windows.These have been replaced with triple track aluminum storm windows.

Staff Comments:
The current owner recently purchased this house,which is one of the best preserved Greek Revival style houses on
Federal Street.The owner is proposing to replace the building's existing true-divided single-glazed wood windows with
:new double-glazed Pella Architect Series wood windows. (18 windows to be replaced in total; 16 visible from a public
way.)Window model will have a 7/8" muntin with putty glaze exterior profile.These are the same replacement windcws
approved by the Commission at the Hawthorne Hotel anc at 53 Summer Street. From the street, it appears that the
existing windows on this house are deteriorated with evidence of putty failure vis ble(see photo below). It is not clew,
however,whether these windows simply require re-glazing or if they are in need of full wood restoration. I will try to
schedule a site visit with the owner prior to the public hearing to allow Commission members to view the windows and
discuss options for restoration instead of full replacement. FYI:The applicant for this project is the window
manufacturer Pella Windows&Doors.
