BUELDING FORM 108-110 Federal Street. Salem
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION _ see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the
communing.
108-110 Federal Street is a good example of a three-story Federal stvle residence. one of several in the McIntire
district and one of a group of three in a row, which Tolles describes as"Salem's most impressive immediate
post-Revolutionary War streetscape." The main block(No 110)is rectangular in plan, with a svmmetrical 5 bay
facade, facing south on Federal Street there is a rear addition on the main block and an ell attached at the northeast
corner. The clapboard walls rise to an asphalt shingle low ridge-hip roof, which is penetrated by a single brick
rear wall chimney on the north slope of the main block The original building is only one bav deep and the
foundation is granite on the front and brick at the secondary elevations and ell. The recessed central trabeated
entry framed by fluted pilasters is the original but the double doors with upper glass panels appear to date from the
Victorian renovation. Granite steps framed by granite knee walls have a single iron rail. Other details include
comerboards, a simple cornice and simple molded window surrounds. The windows have 6/6 sash with louvered
shutters and storm windows. Manv of the sash are early windows with original glass. Rear additions to the main
block include a ane-bav deep, three story rear addition with a canted corner and a 20th c. three-story enclosed stair
at the intersection of the main building and the northeast ell. The rear addition First appears on the 1897 map.
The northeast ell is two stories, rectangular in plan. two bays wide by four bays deep, and rises to an asphalt
shingle hip roof The entry to the ell facing Federal St. (No. 108)has a Victcnan door hood supported on a large
carved bracket. Wood steps and entry porch lead to a wood and glass panel door. The ell appears on the 1874 and
later maps and was part of Moore's renovations. The maps up to 1911 indicate that the ell extended to Andover
Street, and the building outline on the 1911 map suggests there was a porch on the north elevation of the ell facing
Andover Street with a side porch at the northwest comer of the ell. There is no evidence today to confirm this.
Steep granite steps at the rear of the ell lead to the basement and a secondary entrance reached by wood steps and
porch lead to a 20th c. entry in the enclosed rear stair.
The building sits at the sidewalL (Tolles reports it was moved to this high foundation by Moore), but interestingly,
the steps project out into the sidewalk The house is set on a comer lot bounded by Federal St. to the south-
Beckford
outhBeckford St. to the east and Andover St. to the north. The east side yard is n--nmed by a tall hedge with a paved
parking area along Andover St. The west side yard has a chain link fence and tall hedges along Federal Street.
There is a chain link fence along the rear yard and toward the northwest comer is a two bay garage set in from
Andover Street with paved parking in front. It is a two-bay. wood clapboard garage with an asphalt shingle hip
roof and 20th c. typical overhead doors. Although this garage clearly dates from the 20th century, or has at least
been substantially rebuilt, a stable of a similar size and setback was located here as earh,as 1874 and on all
subsequent maps.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE a see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the
building and the role(s)the ownersioccupants plaved within the community.
Although generally referred to as the Prince Mansion. 108-110 Federal Street was constructed c. 1790 for John
Orme. sailmaker. In 1793, the property was sold to Reverend John Prince. Dr. Prince graduated from Harvard in
1776 and became pastor of First Church in Salem in 1779. He was known for his scientific experiments and
inventions including improvements to the air pump, kaleidoscope and microscope. The Prince family owned the
property until 1859 when it was transferred to Francis Parsons. In 1867. Dav d Moore, then the treasurer at the
Salem Gas Light Company, purchased this propertv and moved here from 18 Chestnut Street. Around the turn of
the century. Moore became the president and later treasurer of the Essex Mutual Fire Insurance Co. According to

Tallies.it was Moore who raised the building onto a high foundation.had it remodeled and expanded to the rear.
The descendants of David Moore owned the property until the 1939,when it was conveyed to John and Laura
Young who owned it until 1946. John and Roberta Hyland owned the property from 1946 to 1959. It was then
purchased by W. Neil Goddard. It is currently occupied as apartments.
The house sits on land that had been part of a larger parcel owned by John and Rebecca Beckford during the first
part of the 18th century and had originally been part of a lot of land conveyed from Thomas Trusler upon his death
in 1654 to his wife and had several subsequent owners. As early as 1655 that parcel had a house on it.but
according to Perley's accounts that house was located northwest of 2 Andover Street, closer to the North River.
The Bedford's land was split between George Beckford who purchased the parcel the present building sits on in
1757 and after numerous changes in ownership.that parcel was purchased by John Orne in 1785. The east parcel
of the Beckford's land was purchased by George Beckford and John and Rebecca(Beckford)Archer. Beckford and
Archer had already built a house on the east parcel by the time they purchased it in 1728. The house remained
here until 1821. However.a portion of the east parcel was purchased by the Rev. John Prince to increase the lawn
to the east of his house in 1822,at which time no buildings were mentioned. This purchase completed acquisition
of the present lot. There is some confusion because a building does appear on the 1851 map east of the Prince
Mansion, sitting on Andover Street, but it was gone by 1874.

unanimously (6 to 0) to deny the application for a Certificate of

architectural value of the buildings the kind, texture, design, and
arrangement of exterior building materials, architectural trim, and
shutters= and the relation of such features to similar features of
buildings and structures in the surrounding area.
