Salem Vistor cal Commission ONE SALEM GREEN, SALEM. MASSACHUSETTS 01970 744-4580 February 21, 1986 Mr. & Mrs. James Dykes, Jr. 84 Federal St. Salem, MA 01970 Dear Mr. & Mrs. Dykes: At its meeting of February 19, 1986, the Historical Commission voted 6 to 1 to deny your application for aluminum gutters. This action was taken because the members feel that in the case of your house, the gutters are an integral part of the cornice trim. I have enclosed a copy of t'ie Commission's guidelines regarding architectural. trim and roofing and circled the relevant items. Since the meeting, I have done some research on gutters and came across an article in The Old-House Journal (also enclosed) . The second page of the article discusses a hybrid system which might be relevant for your house. Under this system, an aluminum gutter with a similar profile to the original wooden one is placed in the same location as the wood gutter. This method avoids the problem of aluminum gutters hanging off the building and the problem of leaving.'the cornice trim on the front of the building hanging unfinished at the corners when you remove the gutters on the sides of the house. Another option would be for you to replace your gutters with new wooden ones where necessary and to repair other sections with an epoxy wood filler. The cost for obtaining new wooden gutters (measuring 4" x 5"•) is $4.50/linear foot from Jeffers Lumber. Other lumber yards also carry wooden gutter stock. Epoxies are discussed in another article I've enclosed. As I said to you on the phone, one of our Commission members, David Clarke, feels that if water is leaking into a bedroom ceiling, then you probably also have a probelm with rotting fascia boards which must be addressed. In summary, I believe that we can work out a mutually acceptable solution to this problem. What I suggest is that you review the options and resubmit a revised and more detailed application for our next meeting on Wednesday, March 5, ' 1986. Please call me if you have any questions or would like more information.
