Grey vents would match the asphalt shingles at 396 Essex St. We will add 3-5 vents for access to the attic areas to insulate the attic in Susan Benedicts' condominium. I have provided pictures of the same style of roof vents at different Salem locations. I chose historical homes and saw these style vents everywhere. The existing roof at 396 Essex St. is an asphalt shingle roof. I have provided pictures of the roof. The vents we add will match the roof and most if not all, will NOT be visible from the street. We will not need to add a vent on the front of the house, but may need to add one to the side of the front dormer. All vents may be in the back if they provide us access to all attic areas that need to be insulated. The vents on the back will not be visible to the street. All pictures of existing vents on other historic homes were taken from the street. Thank you for your consideration. Historical Commission 80 Boylston St. Boston, MA 02116 Dear Elise: I am writing to you concerning 396 Essex St, in Salem, the house we spoke about a few weeks ago on the phone. Located in the McIntire Historic District, the main block was built c. 1870 and the rear ell appears to have been added around 1920. David Clarke, the owner, is interested in doing • a tax-act certification project on the building this spring. In the mean- time, he would like to replace the first floor kitchen window on the south elevation with two 2/2 adjoining sash. I have enclosed photographs and sketches to illustrate the proposed change. Mr. Clarke also has to deal with the problem of secondary egress and he would like to do the following: since there are already three roof dormers on the south, east, and north elevations, he would like to add a dormer on the west elevation of the main block. The dormer would contain a door from which tenants could exit and then walk across the roof of the ell and down a spiral fire escape at the-'back of the ell. This staircase would not be visible from the street. We would like your opinions on these alterations as far as conformity with the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. We realize that we are asking you to review these changes individually and not in the context of the whole project and, therefore, we understand that you will only be giving us a preliminary judgment. Mr. Clarke is appearing before the Salem Historical Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 13th for a review of his windows and it would be helpful if we could have your opinion on the above alterations before that date. I will call you on Wednesday to get your reactions. Thanks for your assistance. • Sincerely, Debbie Hilbert Preservation Planner . .3Ci X sr SA r /i9 /a h'un h ihduw Iv a U 7 &c r c r «d Nip SGu fiI • i r 1-1 0 Fssck ST— L)rA um ht(-I Shu ')ups N c re • <p r_.-`•-1,',,.'{ c . .j.' r:;J fir: - '.
