Lafayette Green HC-135 Paint Chips for application from the Kiley House 389 Essex Street, Salem, MA n A pittsfield buff John Vose Goff Historic Preservation & Design Post Office Box 8655, Salem, Massachusetts 01971 PHONE and FAX: (508) 741-1767 May 25, 1993 Steven Sass 9 Crosman Avenue Swampscott, MA 01907 Dear Steven: I was sorry to hear that Ellen objected to the green and yellow portions of the Victorian color scheme for the (Gley House. I still like the scheme, and think it has merit. Part of the reason I like it is because the "yellow" is not really a yellow—it's more of a pumpkin or an ochre; Also, the "green" is so dark, it's almost a black. I also like the authenticity and simplicity of the scheme. I would like to present three variations on the green-yellow-black scheme for you to consider before you reject the idea altogether. Again, please examine these new paint chips in dayligF.t only so you can judge the colors correctly. 1)--Card 1--You might consider substituting Benjamin Moore"Bryant Gold" (PH-7 or HC- l) and Lafayette Green"(HC-135) for the yellow and green chips I gave you earlier. As you can see, this yellow is shifting more towards a gold, or pumpkin, and the green is very dark. Here, we would continue to use the Black for the sash and blinds, the Gold for the body of the building, and the dark Green for the accent items (brackets, columns, horizontal and vertical bands). This scheme uses colors from the Benjamin Moore Historical Colors collection, yet is still very authentic to the original color scheme for the Property. 2)--Card 2— You might also consider muting the tones substantially, say until the yellow becomes Benjamin Moore's Pittsfield Buff, and the Green becomes Benjamin Moore's Hancock Gray. The green-yellow-black scheme now is much more subtle. Here, we would use black for the sash and blinds, Buff for the body, and Hancock Gray for accent items (brackets, columns, horizontal and vertical bands). The original colors are still there, but they have been severely toned down. There are no loud "primary" colors, whatsoever, and the effect is very sophisticated and subtle (perhaps too subtle). 3)—Card 3--We could also introduce a different accent color, e.g Hadley Red. Here, we might use black for the sash and blinds, Montgomery White for the body of the building, and Hadley Red for the "structural" accents (brackets, columns, horizontal and vertical bands.) The colors are now fairly neutral and earth-toned, but are still quite complementary and pleasing. Cards 2 and 3 were cut from the Benjamin Moore Historical Colors brochure, and I'm also enclosing an uncut copy of the brochure for your use. Keep in mind that we can actually mix and match any colors we want. There are over 36 colors in the Historical Colors collection. When you study the uncut brochure--at first glance--which colors do you both prefer? We could very easily assemble a brand new scheme from colors you both find agreeable. Following up on this idea, I suggest you both may want to take a camera with color print film out into the various historical neighborhoods of Swampscott or Salem. There are hundreds of historic houses out there, and many may have particular colors (and color combinations) which you find agreeable. It is also always easier to look at colors on a full-size building, rather than on a card. Bring me some color prints showing houses and details you like, and I will be happy to work with you further to custom-design a paint scheme for your building. I am pleased that you are taking the time to consider the colors carefully. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions whatsoever. Sincerely yours, JO_U - John V. Goff P.S. To further guide you with your project, I am also enclosing a copy of Moss and Winkler's Victorian Exterior Decoration which you may borrow. It contains an abundance of information on Victorian paint schemes (and new paint schemes) which may guide you in your search. I look forward to talking with you further about the colors. $ _.;, - ., <_ ` ° - ' - 1 , -,_._ ^i— _ _- :3s . •-.-s..a E: +;jJ. . R .e R .Y" 9 r •W AlG Y a i SY 1 li f.
