I am seeking a Certificate of Apppropriateness for reconstructing a side entry porch at 388 Essex Street. As
you can see from the enclosed picture,the porta is already largely reconstructed. I had asked the super at
the building to repair the porch, not thinking that I needed the work reviewed by the Historical Commission
or approved by the Building Department.
The super,being very concientious, did a very concientious job. He rebuilt the structure;used Fiberon
Veranda Grooved Composite Decking,a high-quality composite for the treads and decking; and Veranda
Composite Rails, a high-quality composite with the same newel and cap design as the original porch, for the
railing. As you can see in the enclosed pictures,the job is unfinished. Our intention is to add the remaining
risers and latice skirt, then paint the risers,lattice,and tailings the same cream color as the original porch.
But as I received a letter from the Building Department,informing me that I did need your and their
approval,we have stopped the job at this point.
Please understand that I greatly value Salem's historic architecture and townscape,want to see it preserved,
and won a"paint colors"preservation award from the Salem Historical Society for 389 Essex. I did not
think the porch repair would in any way adversely affect Salem's unique historic character. But I recognize
that such repairs need to be brought to your attention and that you,not property owners in the historic
districts, should make that determination.
I appologize and wish to be in compliance with the City of Salem's proceedures. Nothing further will be
done without your approval and that of the Building Department.

permit. Also, Our Historical Committee has no certificate on file for this work. You are directed
