Description of Work Proposed
Please type orpi7ht clearly:Attach additional.sheets, as necessvy.
We are going to begin the process of repainting the building and Carriage House at 350-352 Essex Street.
Currently, there are several shades of the same'mustard yellow' color in use (front and back of the main building
and then also on the carraige house as well), and our plan is to repaint using a historical (Benjamin Moore)color
palette. The color we've chosen for the body of both buildings is from that historical palette and
called'Marblehead Gold' ... it's roughly between the current'body' color of the main house and the carriage house
and certainly within the general hue of both. We will then look to a color from the historical palette
called'Bracken Creme' for the detail around the windows and other ornamental/decorative trim areas. There is a
third color, called'Gunsmith Gray',that we are contemplating using on the window frames should we choose to
take off the existing storm windows to paint and then reinstall. We're not yet committed to doing this, mostly
from a cost perspective, but if we do,this would be out color choice. Lastly, we will paint the front/other
doors'Mopboard Black', a color from the historical palette(this represents a change from the current deep red
which does not match the yellow/gold or the building).
Our plan is to begin with painting the carriage house and to that end,we will have'test paint' on the building
available for you to see within the next week. Painting the main building will follow either later this summer or
next spring.

Description of Work Proposed
Please Lupe or pint clearly.Attach additional sheep, as necessary.
Because of continued water leakage into the carriage house, a decision was made, on an emergency basis,to
repair/replace roof shingles on the structure. There were several previously installed asphalt roofs on the building
making it impossible to identify the source of leak. It appeared that there were three full roofs. The base layer of
roofing was black, the second layer was reddish in color, and the top layer(most recent)was brown. There was
evidence of patching that had occured over the years, using both green and black shingles. The predominant
shingle was of the three tab variety.
My contractor, Murley Contracting, began the process of stripping the roof-which was very time consuming as
there were so many layers, and had not completed the process before I began a week and a half worth of business
travel. Knowing me from several past projects at other properties, and after taking a walk around the
neighborhood to look at the roofing material used on many of the abutting/near abutting properties, the contractor
made the choice of using the GAF 'Timberline' architectural style of shingle- in black(as it was the base layer)
versus the three tab shingle as the architectural style shingle carries a limited lifetime warranty against a 25 year
warranty for the three tab variety. The architectural shingle is only marginally more expensive as a building
material, it carries the look of a'shake' style shingle, and there's no difference in terms of time needed to install
either product, so in his eyes it made perfect sense to go with the architectural shingle.

Addendum to Certificate of Appropriateness Request
He installed the new roofing material and was essentially complete when the Salem
Building Inspector arrived at the property and ordered him to complete the last few
courses of shingling, then =o go complete a building pemvt application/pay a fee that
he would deny on the basis that it needed a Historical Commission approval first, and
to then submit a request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to this Commission and
appear at a public hearing.
At this point, the roof on the carriage house has been installed and is in need of some
final finishing in and around the dormers subject to the outcome of this request.
