The Saleffl4News online Painters' heat gun sparked Ropes blaze By Amanda McGregor STAFF WRITER August 17, 2009 09:13 am SALEM— Workers hurtled carpets, wood and garbage bags of debris out a third-floor window of the Ropes Mansion yesterday as they cleaned up the aftermath of a two-alar fire in the historic mansion. The blaze, in which two firefighters were injured, was ignited early Saturday afternoon by painters using a heat gun on the exterior of the building to remove old paint, according to investigators. Firefighters said the blaze damaged artifacts and contents of the mansion, which is owned by the Peabody Essex Museum. Deputy fire Chief Gerry Giunta said he couldn't estimate the cost of the damage to the building, which is in the McIntire Historic District and on the National Register of Historic Places. "It would be easier to say if it was a regular residence," said Giunta. "Being the Ropes Mansion, its a priceless national treasure." Museum officials would not comment. Fire investigator Lt. Tim Flynn reported that two painters working on the house Saturday fust spotted smoke around noon. "When they got to the corner, there was a little space there, and the heat from the heat gun penetrated into the eaves," said Flynn, of the Salem Fire Investigation Unit, "so they went to their truck and got a fire extinguisher." The extinguisher, however, pushed the fire into the house, which is over 280 years old. The fire smoldered inside, unseen, for about 30 minutes before tripping the fire alar. "The wood is very dry in a house that old," said Giunta, "so it doesn't take much." Firefighters from seven cities and towns responded to battle the fast-moving fire, which traveled across the third floor and attic of the mansion at 318 Essex St. Salem firefighter John Roth and Peabody firefighter Tom Desmond were treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration at Salem Hospital and released on Saturday. "They had to rip down a majority of the ceiling of the third floor in pretty extreme heat conditions," said Giunta. "It was 90-plus degrees outside, and it has a slate roof, so all the heat was radiating down." "They did an excellent job," Flynn said of the fire crews. "They basically saved the building. It was the most minimal damage you could have with a fire like that." Historic mansion damaged The Georgian-style Ropes Mansion, which is white with black shutters, was built in 1727 and once housed several generations of Salem's prominent Ropes family. Giunta said the fire started on the side of the mansion facing First Church, traveled up the roof line, and down the opposite side of the mansion that faces in the direction of the library. Firefighters put salvage covers over items in the mansion to try to protect them from damage caused by ripping out the ceiling and "the water that cascaded down each floor level," Giunta said. "There was old furniture and other artifacts, old books" he said. "There were some computers and stuff like that, some state-of-the-art things in there, too, but mostly old artifacts." Yesterday at the mansion, which city records value at$972,000, crews wearing masks chucked debris and black garbage bags out the window; the items plummeted and slapped onto a blue tarp on the ground below. At least five vehicles from Pro-Care Complete Restoration Services were parked in the Essex Street neighborhood, and crews also carried items and garbage bags from the house. "They had movers there as early as a couple of hours after the fire," Giunta said. "There was also a cleanup company in there aggressively cleaning." Robert Monk, facilities director for the Peabody Essex Museum, was at the scene yesterday and, through another employee, refused to comment about the fire or damage to the mansion's contents. He directed questions to museum spokeswoman April Swieconek. Calls to Swieconek's cell phone were not returned as of press time. A sign for Presto Painting—a North Shore painting, roofing and carpentry company —was in the lawn at the mansion yesterday. Calls to the painting company were not returned as of press time. Flynn said the fire was accidental. "It wasn't done purposely," he said, "but when you shoot an extinguisher into an opening, you're actually pushing the fire in,which they didn't know. It was accidental." Flynn said the painters were using a heat gun to melt paint and remove it from the exterior of the mansion. They had been there since 8 a.m., he said. Flynn likened a heat gun to a hair dryer, with similar heating coils. "There are certain regulations out there with lead paint," said Giunta. "Sanders put the lead into the air, so the heat melts it and keeps it together so you're not breathing fine dust." Flynn said the fire initially ignited a space between two rooms and the upstairs hallway. "It really got going inside there," he said, "and then smoke was filling the house from the top down, getting thicker." The fire alarm system went off and automatically notified the Salem Fire Department at 12:21 p.m. on Saturday, and the first fire truck was on scene at 12:23 p.m, according to Giunta. A second alarm was called one minute later. Firefighters from Peabody, Marblehead, Danvers, Lynn, Swampscott and Beverly all assisted at the scene. Hamilton, Lynn, Swampscott and Nahant also provided station coverage for Salem, according to Giunta. Deputy Chief Jim Lynch and Acting Chief Brian Harrington were also on scene. Firefighters worked for three hours to extinguish the fire and salvage items, Giunta said. The Fire Department kept the mansion under a fire watch until 8 a.m. yesterday in case any hot spots flared up, he said. Several windows on the top floor have been boarded up and a "no trespassing" sign has been posted across the pathway along the side of the house, where people typically enter to tour the Ropes Mansions gardens. The Saturday afternoon fire at the Ropes Mansion, which investigators say was accidentally started by a painter's heat gun, heavily damaged a third-floor attic and apartment, but left most of the 18th-century Georgian Colonial intact. Although a glass pitcher broke downstairs, virtually all of the valuable objects and furnishings survived. "We marveled that there was so little damage," said Joshua Basseches, the PEM's deputy director. Among the salvaged treasures were a 345-piece set of Chinese export porcelain, a collection of cups, saucers and dinner plates, and nearly 300 pieces of Irish cut glass, including fine wine goblets, tumblers and decanters. "It is the largest surviving set of table glass and of Chinese export dinner service to survive in America from the early 19th century," said Dean Lahikainen, a museum curator who once lived in the house. Also intact were pieces of f imiture made by Mark Pitman, a noted Salem cabinet-maker who lived across the street. While firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze, which started around noon, the museum went into action. As part of a disaster plan, the PEM rapidly assembled a team of conservators, curators and collections staff. As soon as they were allowed inside the 318 Essex St. house, they removed all of the China, glassware, portraits, books, furniture and family papers and took them to the museum for safe keeping. "I feel through some combination of skill, planning and luck we dodged a bullet," Basseches said yesterday as he led a tour of the house. The Ropes Mansion, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is special even among the museum's collection of historic properties because it is filled with furnishings collected by several generations of one family over more than a century. "I think that's what makes it unique," Lahikainen said. "All the objects in there belong to the house. ... Everything in there, belonged to the Ropes family." Built around 1727, the house was purchased in 1768 by Judge Nathaniel Ropes II, a supreme court judge in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The porcelain and glass were wedding gifts belonging to Sally Ropes, who moved back to the family homestead in the early 1800s after the death of her husband. The house was bequeathed to the public in 1907 following the death of the last two unmarried Ropes sisters, according to the book "Architecture in Salem." It opened for tours a few years later. "It is the combination of architectural and social history ... that make this house so important," Basseches said. Although most everything of value was saved, there was considerable damage to ceiling plaster and reproduction carpets and wallpaper on the first two floors, largely from water used to fight the fire. But almost all of that can be fixed or replaced, museum officials said. Some textiles and bedding also were damaged. The PEM sent a large basket of fruit to the Fire Department yesterday to thank them. During the blaze, firefighters covered furniture and glassware with large tarps and moved objects to the center of rooms or inside fireplaces to protect them. They also did relatively little damage on the top floor. The Fire Department, a PEM official said, did an amazing job. "Great is probably the understatement of the century," said Bob Monk, the museum's director of facilities and security. "It's more along the lines of miraculous." Work crews were busy yesterday clearing rubble and drying out the interior. There were fans and humidifiers going throughout the building. Holes were drilled into a few walls and floors to inject hot, dry air. The PEM did not have an estimate of the damages, or of how long it will be until the building reopens for tours. The fire started just before it was scheduled to open to the public at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The popular Ropes Mansion garden was closed Sunday, but reopened yesterday. "We know how important the garden is to the Salem public," Basseches said. Saturday's fire was not the fust or worst in the mansion's history. In 1839, Abigail Ropes burned to death in the house when her dress caught fire. An addition was gutted in 1894 in a fire reputedly started by a disgruntled worker. The home also suffered a few broken windows in 1774 when it was attacked by a mob of patriots. Judge Ropes was a Loyalist. Copyright © 1999-2008 cnhi, inc. No change in the original scope or intent to execute an in-kind replacement of the roof and chimney repair and maintenance is anticipated. Further to concerns relative to the amount of copper skirting that is being applied, please be assured that the replacement copper is equal to the copper that was removed. I am certain that because the newly installed copper has not yet acquired the patina of the original and that the roof balustrade has temporarily been removed, there is an illusion of there being more copper than the original installation.
