This application is from The McIntire at 315 Essex Street Condominiums. We are requesting Certification of Non-applicability for roof work that we need to undertake. We need to repair damages to roof shingles and under the shingles due to last winter's storm. The work will be done by JB Kidney Roofers in Salem. The shingles and painting of wood on the dormers around where the work will be done are the same material and colors that are on the building currently. Scott Kidney has worked with Historical Commission before and understands the restrictions. Attached separately to this email request is the email communication with JB Kidney describing the roof work and photos taken of the roof. It was difficult to show the roof from all angles given the other homes nearby. There was no view of the roof from Cambridge St. I'm not sure if the quality or location of the photos tell the story. I was unable to photgraph the roof from all angles. Please contact me at either phone number or email if you have any questions or need additional information. IA Cambridge St abuts the 315 Essex St property on its southwest corner and there are 4 of these windows. The developer has produced a fine and historically appealing exterior for this former blight on the neighborhood. And, while the requested fence will keep them from being visible from Summer St, it does not shield my house from the 4 rejected windows. If the developer does not care to replace the 4 rejected windows, I'd request he erect a fence on our common property line. This would shield my view, too, and complement the fence proposed for the eastern boundary. It would also result in a totally fenced-in parking lot. The fence plan is diagrammed below. Renovation will follow the attached schematic design drawings. All architectural details will be based on period examples in the neighborhood and assemblies such as windows will be chosen from the Historic Commission's approved list. Background (from Form no 1497 Form B Massachusetts Historic Commission 9/7/76 (Copy attached) The Building was erected after 1885 on the site of the old Shattuck House. It has had a variety of commercial uses including Photographic Studios on the ground floor and a 14 Room SRO with 2 bathrooms and 2 kitchens on the second floor. A review of the existing plan on the second/attic floors reveals parallel stairs and plumbing that would indicate that previously the second/attic floors were two mirror-image apartments There are no interior details of historic note save for 2 stairways that connect the 2nd floor and attic on either side. These stairs are being retained and will provide access to the bedroom floor in the attic of two duplex units at the rear of second floor. See complete plans and elevations attached to this application. Renovations include replacement and relocation of windows and doors, replacement of exterior clapboards to the extent required to execute the final design scheme and raised dormers at the attic on the sides and rear to provide additional headroom in bedrooms and bathrooms to be constructed on that floor. New HVAC, electrical, plumbing, gas fitting and related systems along with the division of the basement into 6 storage areas and a common mechanical room. Site planning improvements include the reduction and re-arrangement of the parking for 10 cars to provide planted buffers for adjacent properties to the extent shown on the Site Plan. v .0 'n \\ 'WMINB D Salem Historical Commission 120 WASHINGTON STREET, SALEM,MASSACHUSETTS 01970 (978) 745-9595 EXT 311 FAX 1978) 740-0404 CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed: ❑ Construction ❑ Moving ❑ Reconstruction Alteration ❑ Demolition ❑ Painting ❑ Signage ❑ Other work as described below will be appropriate to the preservation of said Historic District, as per the requirements set forth in the Historic District's Act (M.G.L.
